2.3 The World and the They

The last part of the basic model, as we have it so far, is the World and the They; or rather, in the case of Homo sapiens, the Earth and universe in which we find ourselves, and other humans.  This section is going to be less functional and more philosophical in nature, as we are going to look at the relationship between Dasein and the World which, whilst something of an aside since it has no immediate effect on the model itself, is important to clarify at this stage because there exists an almost intrinsic misunderstanding on the part of the average instance as to the correct relationship between itself and the World.

The commonplace view of the world as it relates to the human mind is that the mind is a product of the brain, and the brain exists within a universe that we understand in terms of the sciences; physics, chemistry and biology.  This is easy to appreciate, as is the simple philosophical notion that stems from this, namely that what is "inside my mind" is separate from what is "in the world" and that the senses provide a bridge connecting the reality of the world with the reality of one's mind.

Now this is not incorrect, but, as Heidegger would say, it covers up the real nature of the relationship between the mind and the World by not being cognisant of the language being used.  What the mind Is and what the World Is, what constitutes their being, has not been explicated, and the position becomes weaker when we do question their meaning.  To clarify then, one must think of the mind in terms of Dasein, but understand it as having a functional and an Entity component.

This image summarises the basic relationship between Dasein and the World.  We know that the World is detected by senses, and through the machinations of Interpretations within Dasein, Entities come to represent the World through their interrelations, this is the Being-in-the-World of the Entities of Dasein.  Then, through further Interpretation, Potentiality-for-Being may provide the physical manifestation of Dasein with a goal for Action, which effects a change in the World, completing the cycle of sense and response, action and reaction, that is the fundamental evolutionary purpose of Dasein.

To understand what is meant by Being-in-the-World and the duality of Dasein, we shall follow a human Dasein from its entry into the World and watch its development.

Dasein: Initialisation

Dasein is initialised sometime before birth in humans, the precise time is of little importance here.  For the first few years, Dasein is adjusting to a number of things, of which the most important are the world around it, the other instances of Dasein around it, the They, and the physical body it inhabits.  In this period, Anticipations, especially in new situations, are going to be far removed from the "actuality" reported by the young senses, these disparities between a Potentiality-for-Being and an Entity Now producing regular occurrences of Shock.

What information is sent down the Motor action pathway is largely nonsense as well at this point.  The instance lacks motor control experience, situated in other areas of the brain, the cerebellum for example, but more importantly the ability to form meaningful Potentialities required to initiate such actions in the first place.

Accordingly, the feedback it receives from the World is of a passive quality.  Dasein has done nothing with intent to change the world, cannot recognise the effect of its own actions, and certainly can't perceive that it itself exists.  At this stage Dasein is operating solely as a function, an Interpretive machine, akin to simple animals, but what it can and is doing is forming an ever increasing number of Entities and interconnections, representing the things of the World, creating its own relative ontology that we call Being-in-the-World.

Dasein: Familiarity

After a few years, things are becoming to appear more familiar to Dasein.  Within the small world it inhabits, the frequency of aberrant Potentialities-for-Being has decreased as the quality of the Being-in-the-World of its Entities is now quite accurate, but most importantly its sense of self has begun to form.   Other instances constantly call it by the same noise, this sound is repeated so often in the context of its presence or requirement to do something, the instance has linked this sound Entity with the connected body that is also permanent and familiar.   This Entity is the beginning of the Entity of Dasein.

The physicality, the gravity, friction and inertia, of the world Dasein finds itself in is now not so foreign.  Nor too is the attached body, such that Dasein is familiar with what is possible and can now Anticipate its own movement.  This Potentiality-for-Being, the possibility of itself in the future, allows purposeful motor action stimuli, and consequently movement that achieves what was Anticipated.   At all times from now on, the Action of Dasein shall originate in the Anticipated Potentiality-for-Being of Self.

So having started with a blank sheet Dasein, simply Interpreting according to the basic model so far, having access to the World it first builds its own ontology, the Being-in-the-World of Entities and then, more subtly, creates an Entity of Self within its Being-in-the-World.   Through the They, its own being and Actions have been reflected back unto its own Interpretations, till the point it associates and then develops this Entity with other Entities, already in place, pertaining to the Self.

Thus, the function of Dasein has, thanks to the presence of other instances within the World around it, been able to build an Entity of itself within itself.  So when Heidegger criticises Kant and philosophical tradition, and indeed everyone who supposed our commonplace conception of the mind and the world above, he points out:

To have faith in the Reality of the 'external world', whether rightly or wrongly; to "prove" this Reality for it, whether adequately or inadequately; to presuppose it, whether explicitly or not - attempts such as these which have not mastered their own basis with full transparency, presuppose a subject which is proximally worldless or unsure of its world, and which must, at bottom, first assure itself of a world.

Being and Time, H.206

The Entity of Dasein requires the Being-in-the-World within the function of Dasein before it can even come into Being. Therefore, to try to "prove" a World or a connection between the Self and the World is missing the point since Dasein, the inquirer, needs a World to Be in the first place.

Or...

The function of Dasein is necessarily manifest within the World, but the ontology on which the Entity of Dasein is founded is not that of the World, but the ontology of Being-in-the-World provided by its own function.

Or...

The Reality of the World is not ignored nor proven, that remains a task for universal ontology and metaphysics, instead it is rendered meaningless since that ontology in no way affects the ontological nature of Dasein on which it founds itself.

Summary
  • Dasein initialises with no conception of the self or the World. Through Interpretation of things in the World it represents within itself the World as the Being-in-the-World of Entities.
  • Through interaction with other instances, the They, Dasein gradually forms an Entity of Self as part of Being-in-the-World.
  • The Entity of Dasein allows meaningful Potentialities-for-Being of the Self which translate to purposeful Action.
  • Interpretation and Being-in-the-World are the cornerstones of the ontology of Dasein that obviates the need to address the metaphysics of the World in which it is manifest.
