Workshops We run a number of workshops both integrated within the school timetable and as extra-curricular clubs. Curriculum and skill based workshops We at HENs can offer a variety of workshops. We have themed plays that focus on issues such as road safety, domestic abuse, binge drinking etc and we can formulate workshops to go alongside these issues. Please see the EDUCATION page for more information. HENs can also offer more focussed skill workshops on a range of topics from aspiration to self-esteem, to job and career options. Enrichment Days Secondary School Enrichment Workshops – Whole Yr groups Aimed at Years 7-11 Each session will last 2 to 2 ½ hours depending on
timetabling. 2 x simultaneous Film Workshops, 2 x simultaneous
HENs Den Workshops occurring AM, then groups swap activity in the afternoon. FILM WORKSHOP – (Max 25 young people in each session) This workshop enables the young people to bring to life their own stories through the use of film. The young people will learn the tricks of the film making trade, techniques and new skills will also be taught with lots of fun being had along the way. The workshop aims to enhance self-esteem, confidence, creative thinking and working as part of a team. We can theme the workshop as well so that the stories they decide to bring to life are on a set theme or issue such as; Aspiration, Transition, Motivation, Mental Health, Well Being etc. As the sessions are short there is no time for on-site editing. We can take the films away and edit them professionally (see optional extra below) and send the discs back a couple of weeks later where your school can have their own screening. Or we can just upload the material in its filmed state. NOTE * Filming does require quiet locations ideally a hall space will be available plus at least 1 other fall out space, allowing 2 separate spaces for filming (these can be classrooms or drama studios). THE HENs DEN – (Max 25 young people in each session) Following the format of the popular, hit TV show ‘Dragons Den’ the ‘HENs DEN’ aims to get children and young people thinking creatively and confidently whilst using there imaginations throughout the session to come up with new inventions, ideas and possible business plans. Its other main objective is to improve aspiration levels amongst boys and girls, whilst enhancing self-esteem, teamwork and positive attitudes. The workshop is very effective and at the same time brings the idea of academic achievements, business and enterprise together in a very fun, interactive and informative way with the emphasis being solely on the children and young people. The focus for HENs DEN can also change from general ideas to ideas on a particular theme, for instance; Mental Health, Aspiration, Transition, Motivation, Sport etc. The session begins with some games to get everyone warmed up and working together as a team. The group is then split into smaller groups (i.e. group of 30 would be split into 5 groups of 6). Each group is given a cue card with a written statement and basic facts relating to an entrepreneurial idea that they are to develop. In their groups they have to come with an invention/new product/or concept appropriate to their cue card. The groups have to pitch their idea to the rest of the class, design a prototype and create their own advert which are filmed and then played at the end of the session. Format for the day: If a year group is made of 120 young people we would require 4 separate sessions. The best way would be to split the year group into quarters and run four simultaneous workshops (2xFilm, 2xHENs Den) in the morning and then again in the afternoon. This would require 8 HENs staff. Optional Extra: We can edit the films made in the film sessions and the adverts made during HENs Den into a DVD for the school to show at a later date. This is a great way to conclude the event and build in a legacy of the work the young people have created. Some schools also choose to play it on their plasma screens that are located in various parts of the school. Approx 8 films from the Film Workshop and 16 adverts from the HENs Den workshops Feedback from a happy Deputy Head "Hi Natalie Just a quick "thank you" to you and your team for today. The girls (and staff) looked as though they really enjoyed thenselves. We look forward to the DVD!!! Best Wishes Mr Dudley Deputy Head Bishop Hall Girls School" After School Clubs We run lots of after school clubs in both primary and secondary schools from film, fashion, animation and to our popular variety club. These clubs run normally for a term and typically run for 1 1/2 hrs. Secondary Schools Schools book our after school clubs for a variety or reasons, sometimes to offer a skill with an element of fun or to address certain issues such as low self-esteem or confidence issues. For this reason we have developed shorter programmes that run in blocks of 6 weeks. FILM* Our popular film club spans over 6 weeks working with the young people on how to make short films. In small groups they have to come up with the ideas and complete all the filming work with guidance from HENs Staff. On a 7th session there is a red carpet screening event where an invited audience of parents and carers come along to see the finished films. This workshop is great for those who need a creative outlet. We often have feedback from teachers and heads of years that our film project is a great focussing tool for those who generally struggle with everyday school routine. *See the video clip and article for a version of our film club!! This workshop is a great way to get groups of young people working together. Over 6 weeks the young people learn skills and techniques to revamp old and recycled clothes into fashion items fit for either the 20's, 40's, 60's, 80's, or present day. Once again in HENs Style, the young people are responsible for the ideas and hard graft (with close help of course) turning boring clothes into something fantastic that they then model on the 7th session at a red carpet Fashion Show. They also spend a session with a professional makeup artist to practice how to create the look to finish off their outfits. Another great workshop for young people struggling to engage, young carers, looked after children or those with a passion to try something different. OPTIONAL EXTRAS Often we are asked to film the progress of the clubs and those attending so we at HENs can create a fully edited DVD for your school. It will document the sessions, bi-og the young people attending and be a fantastic keep sake (and show off tool) for the school. If you are interested in an after school club please contact us and we can have a chat about the options. Extra Curricular workshops HENs also offer many of our workshops as full day activities for the holidays. We can run activity's on arts and crafts, musical theatre themes, spy academy, harry potter, the olympics, fashion, film, animation as well as seasonal workshops.
