Welcome to my web site. I am a historian of science working at the Centro Interuniversitário de História das Ciências e da Tecnologia, at the University of Lisbon (CIUHCT-UL), and I teach at the Master Program in the History and Philosophy of Science. Projects The edition of Pedro Nunes's Works (Obras de Pedro Nunes), by the Lisbon Academy of Sciences and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is still my most absorbing project. Presently I am terribly busy with vol. VII (Nunes' manuscripts). See the Projects page for updated information. I am working with Bernardo Mota on the edition of Francisco de Melo's mathematical works. Although formally ended as an FCT Project, the Cataloguing of the scientific manuscripts at the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal continues. More than 1000 manuscripts analysed and catalogued so far -- and some nice findings I will be reporting here... Books: Here's an update. Go to the Books page for more information. If you happen to read any of them let me know your opinion/criticism. Vol. V of Pedro Nunes' Works (Nunes' commentary on Peurbach's Theoricae novae planetarum) was published. My translation of Galileo's Sidereus Nuncius is now on its third edition. Other: I am at the Editorial Board of HoST: Journal of History of Science and Technology. Be sure to check the latest issue. May 2012. The original copy of Francisco de Melo's mathematical works was recently located in Germany, at Stralsund Municipal Archives.

 Teaching I am teaching "História da Ciência e da Tecnologia em Portugal", a 2nd semester course at the Master Program in the History and Philosophy of Science. Next speaking engagements: 25 May.
