Limerick verse has recently recurred in the spotlight in Sweden and LIMERICKS of ALL SWEDEN (HELA SVERIGES LIMERICKAR) contains newly written limericks from a nationwide swedish limerick verse webb contest during the summer 2008 out of which the very best verses were selected for this book. The compilation was developed by Ulf Herrströmer who also provides some newly written limericks of his own to this paperback. All limericks in this book are illustrated. Ulf Herrströmers father Milton was born in South Dakota in 1898 as one of eight children of Hugo and Ida who came from Sweden in 1886.

Ulf Herrströmers first limerick book have recieved some good reviews, among others from swedish famous lecturer Rolli Fölsch who, among other things, writes as follows in his review:

Below You find an article from februari 2009 from the newspaper, På Plats i Väster, with readers mostly in the Gothenburg region of Sweden. You can reach this Swedish newspaper through  www.ppiv.se

Hela Sveriges limerickar is the name of a FUNNY  paperback, which was published last Christmas. The book is  produced by Ulf  Herrströmer in Kullavik  based  from a Limerick contest  he  launched from his blog  spring 2008 and  then went on  Internet throughout  summer. Of more than  300 received newly written competition-limericks were over 100 of the very best in the book  together with  some of Ulf Herrströmers own new verses.  All limericks in the book  have funny illustrations and the book has already,  not at least, become a popular  give-awaybook. It is sold in Bokia Stores  and from Bokia  Internet bookstore, and from several other intenet-bookshops.
Since Ulf Herrströmer in  1996 won in a Limerick contest  published by Medicinarspexet  in Gothenburg and  some pharmaceutical companies have  he continued to write these  British joke verses. He  says that he feels Limerick writing  as lustily  and relaxing and published in the autumn of 2007,  a Limerick pocket labeled  "Doktor Limericks salvo of laughter"(Doktor Limericks skrattsalva)  and yet a time is  to buy in Bokia and of  several Internet-book-shops. The  pocketbokk was well received by both  the swedish public and critics.
Ulf Herrströmers parents often said that, Ulf started  rhyme already at 5 years of age  but it was only after his first place  in Limerick Contest 1996
his limerickrhyming took real  speed and even more so after retirement in autumn 2007.  Ulf worked for many years as  an occupational health physician and then,  in the years before retirement, with general medical  reception at Torggatan in  Gothenburg.  Ulfs wife Mona and  the couple's three children and the current four  grandchildren have now become accustomed  to Ulfs rhyming and  is both encouraging but  while sometimes the brightest  critics during the verse  origins.  Ulf is also involved since the autumn
2007  with newly written  limericks in the paper In Place  in the West(På Plats i Väster).
Ulfs uncle, Bror Blomqvist,  for many Gothenburger  known as "Brollan", and that  for many years worked on  Götaverken as Office Manager,  was there with the start
of company corpration sports and became its  consultant in West and  then nationwide consultant for company corporation sports -"KORPEN".
He was easy to  rhyme and used to write  tribute songs, not least  to different jubilarer in genera  and is also the author of The natrional anthem of corporation sports in Sweden.  that is sung on Luffarvisans  melody. Ulf remember  uncles many ingenious rhymes, and said: - I am happy  and grateful that a little rhyme - DNA from grandparents  apparently also has been pouring down unto me.
In the current pocket-book, Hela Sveriges limerickar( All Sweden's limericks),  Herrströmer has twenty-four  cowritwers from Kiruna in the north to Simrisham in the south.
Mention may be long - TV and Radio Doctor Bo  Martin has a contribution  in the book and in connection with  contest told me that he  over the years, sometimes with amusement  to write limerick, mostly  those with medical-related topics,  as the newly written one with which he participates in the Hela Sveriges limerickar.
Hela Sveriges limerickar  has already received a nice review  written by Dr Ph Bo Nordstrand  in Tibro who since many years helps Bibliotekstjänst  as lecturer, and of those
was designated the The lecteur of Year 2004 in all of Sweden.
In the review of the book writes  he, inter alia, that the whole  Sweden limerick contains  many pearls, nice layout  and beautiful illustrations.
The Limerick is a fiverow  British joke verse where the row number 1, 2  and 5 each shall contain  nine to ten syllables, three  stressed, and these rows,  rhyme with one another. Row 3 and 4  will have six syllables, with two stressed ones, and these rows shall  also rhyme with one another. The  first line ends very often  with a city name but it is  not entirely necessary. A common  pattern is that row 1 presents  a person and his or  her residence. In row 2 gives an  characteristic or take out situation. This develops in the  following lines, with a surprising  effect of line 5 - comical,  absurd, or of many  growers of the genre, daring or  even indecent. The absurdity already existed in the first famous  undertaking, Edward Lear,  but he never himself used the  name Limerick.
Edward  Lear, 1812-88, British  author and artist, is best  known for nonsense verse. His A  Book of Nonsense became extremely  popular and was published first  time in 1846 and then in  total of 23 editions of the  to Lear's death. How verse form  Limerick had its name  from Limerick, a county on  Ireland, as the country's third  largest city and provincial capitals in  County County Limerick  in the county of Munster, is not clear.  The very verse measure, however, is old  in the British Isles and  there are those who claim that, in a primitive form it can be found in rhymes  from the Middle Ages. In any case  there are verses in Limerick meters from the late eighteenth century
both in England  and Ireland.
In his publication Limerickboken,  published in 1990, notes radio man and  literary historian Bure  Holmbäck in Torekov that  the first finding of word Limerick  in Sweden is in 1911 in a  Official Journal Variegated  Blade("Brokiga Blad") - "Sweden's first COLOR  magazine ". The word  contained therein in a text that suggests limerickrhyming at that time had  started to be known and popular also for a Swedish audience.  I agree with Bo Nordstrands  review of the Hela Sweriges limerickar saying : The book contains many  pearls and of the many  resourceful Limericks in this book  I stuck specifically for the following two written  by Jonas Svensson, who contributed a great many, very creative verses to  the limerick contest and also to the book.Unfortuatnly the rhymes in the verses are lost in translation.

On the dot

Two ladybird in Tanganyika
was so exactly spot-like
that one said: - You
is it You who are You
or I who are You,
must have a look.

The word for @ in Sweden is snabel-a ( Elefant trunk-A)

Snabel-A

A dyslexic elephant in Moscow
sorry that he could not write Russian A
appeared late in laughter
when he realized that
his signature is written with @

As I wrote before, unfortuatnly the rhymes in the verses are lost in translation. I assure You that all verses rhyme perfectly in Swedish.

Hela Sveriges limerickar has  already become a popular  give-away-book for a host or  hostess with a twinkle in his eye.  Encourages all  funny rhyme loveing readers to
start examining Limerick Writing. Perhaps this now allows us to relax in the whole  country as lust-filled glimmer of hope in these grim times?
That the old saying, A good laugh prolongs life, has now many times  been confirmed by modern stress research  and that therefore anything  so good and healthy can actually be so  funny. "With Hela Sveriges limerickar  it is easy to laugh  more, "concludes Ulf Herrströmer  our conversation.

Below follows an article I wrote för for Gotheburg newspaper På Plats i Väster that also was published in an shorter version in Gothenburgs larges paper, Göteborgsposten, the day before Ingo was buried in Gothenburg 2009.

The day I almost fought with "Ingo"

A beautiful, white frosted, January morning in 1946 was our neighborhood gang gathered on the large hill at the wide grassplain outside Johanneberg Church in Gothenburg armed with "lances." These "lances" we had got by collecting, from the 6-storey houses ejected, de-needeled Christmas pine trees. This year, when I would become 9 years of age, I was the leader of "the Johanneberg Boys Gang". Armed with these lances we used to have battles and measure our strength against the adjacent neighborhood gangs and this morning there was the gang from "Solgårdarna" that turned up. Leader of "Solgårdarna" that morning proved to be a certain Ingemar Johansson - yes just the one. But no one knew at that time his inherent capacity and future fame. He would complete 14 years this year but looked like a large, shapely 18-year-old, at least the head higher than I and probably twice as wide. The following year, he would first come to stand for boxing club Redbergslids club-copmpetition for juniors in a show match. The real boxing fight debut came in the junior championships in Gothenburg in 1948 when Ingemar seriously began his remarkable boxing career. In particular, I remember him on the very morning of January in Johanneberg as an extremely broadbuilt adult. We came face to face. I remember that I felt quite scared at the sight of Ingemar. But there was never any battle that morning. I felt that I wanted to avert it, when I perceived the great Ingemar Johansson as a whole over powerful opponent, though with a most friendly expression in his face and even friendly language and body language. To my great happiness, however, our own neighborhood gang of Johanneberg had gathered at least twice as many as Ingemars that morning. Our gang included both Bertil Steen and Gilbert Holmström at my side, already friends and future schoolmates at Hvitfeldtska. Probably valued Ingemar Johansson these powerbalance carefully and realized that the expiration of any battle would be uncertain. Perhaps Ingemar was already one of the wise caution and clear analytical ability, he would show some years later in the finals against the giant like Ed Sanders of the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 when he chose to give priority to defense and not attack and had his well-deserved silver medal only thirty years later. We fencered up to only a few friendly strokes with our lances, and then we decided jointly not to continue to fight and all receded. Years went by and after the nice time at Hvitfeldtska we boys from the West Coast as destined to become doctors and dentists did our military service at T2 in Skövde. In the late evenings there we often could enjoy improvised tapton from Gilbert Holmströms´s already formidable tenorsax that made us fall asleep with thoughts and feelings light-years away from all warfare even in a regulatory regimental bed. When I, after such a servicesummer, in September 1958, in a relatively close range just got to see Ingo knock Eddie Machen in the first round at New Ullevi and the following year in the radio heard him defeat Floyd Patterson at Yankee Stadium in New York and become world champion in professional heavyweight champion I realized who I had almost been proposed by which the church in Johanneberg hill and all the rough maltreatment, I probably had escaped that very January morning. But it has happened to me many years later that I bragged for my children and now also for my grandchildren that I almost fought with Ingo.
