Aug. 8 - We will go over the Computer Lab Rules and work on an All About Me activity and try to think of A Computer Word for Each Letter. Aug. 15 - The fifth graders are reviewing home row keys and working in Microsoft Word to create a Name Poem using Word Art. Aug. 22 - We will read about the History of Computers and begin typing our Name Poems. Aug. 29 - We will continue reading and discussing the History of Computers and continue typing our Name Poems. Sept. 5 - We will continue reading and discussing the History of Computers and finish typing and print our Name Poems. Sept. 12 - We will be using Microsoft Excel to create a chart of predictions and actuals, guessing how many students in each class are right-handed and how many are left-handed. Sept. 19 - We will finish our History of Computers packets and expand our Excel spreadsheet by adding a sheet based on the entire 5th grade's right-handed or left-handedness. Sept. 26 - Students will begin a new packet, Inside a Computer, and create a new Excel Spreadsheet on World Population. They will print an exploding pie graph of World Populations. Oct. 3 - Students will read in their packet, Inside a Computer, and create a new Excel Spreadsheet on Favorite Doughnuts. They will print a doughnut graph of their class's favorite doughnuts. Oct. 10 - will continue reading about Inside a Computer and practice typing with home row keys in Type to Learn 3. They will begin a unit on research and report writing based on the Food Pyramid, in conjunction with their Science unit.In November and December we will be learning about the drawing tools that can be found in Microsoft Word and Paint. We will draw and decorate Christmas Trees for the holidays. In January we will be working on our Science Fair reports. Students will write their reports in science classes and type them in the computer lab. We will learn about MLA formatting and use Easy Bib to create our works cited pages.
