Cultural Books

One of my favourite things about Barefoot books is the many different countries and religions they represent.  I am going to highlight a few below

Great Race

The Story of the Chinese Zodiac.
Race long with Rat, Monkey, Dragon, and their companions while discovering the origin of the Chinese Zodiac. This bright and colorful book includes intriguing notes about the Chinese calendar, the festivals, and the animal that rules each year.

The Story Of Divaali
The Story of Divaali is a wonderful rendition of the "Ramayana," an age-old Hindu epic filled with magic, miracles and adventure. The compelling story tells of a young prince Rama who overcomes Ravana the Demon King. Out of his triumph, Divaali, the Indian festival of lights, is born.

Elephant Dance

Ravi and Anjali are fascinated by their grandfather's stories of India, where the sun is like a ferocious tiger, the wind is like a wild horse, and monsoon rains cascade from the sky like waterfalls. Ravi particularly loves to hear about the festival of Divaali, where parading elephants take pride of place in their grandfather's memories, and he dreams of having an elephant dance to the tune he composes on his flute.

Indian Tales

From magical spirits in the northeastern mountains to sneaky robbers and brave heroines in the Indus Valley, these stories, each taken from a different state, are full of action and adventure. Cultural notes introduce every tale, giving readers a taste of India's rich and diverse heritage.

A Calendar Of Festivals

Celebrations from around the World.  Did you know that when you go trick-or-treating on Halloween you are taking part in an ancient Celtic festival? This intriguing collection of tales takes us back to the origins of many festivals which are celebrated throughout the world and traces some of the stories that are connected to them. Each of the tales in this anthology has an introduction which explains its origins and its significance for the people who celebrate it.

Mama Panya's Pancakes
On market day, Mama Panya's son Adika invites everyone he sees to a pancake dinner. How will Mama Panya ever feed them all? This clever and heartwarming story about Kenyan village life teaches the importance of sharing, even when you have little to give.

Along the way, the children encounter all sorts of animals including elephants, lions and monkeys, while counting from one to ten in both English and Swahili. The lively, rhyming text is accompanied by an illustrated guide to counting in Swahili, a map, notes about each of the animals, and interesting facts about Tanzania and the Maasai people.

We're Riding on a Caravan

An Adventure on the Silk Road   Explore the world of stunning silk, delicious spices and exotic trade locations in this rhyming tale about a Chinese family's journey along the Silk Road, the trade route that runs thousands of miles through Asia.
