Hand-knit sweaters, American doll clothes and quilts
Martha was born on Mason's Island, off Mystic,
Connecticut, when the small island had a handful of summer residents, including
some artists from New York City. Her father, Yngve Edward Soderberg, was
one of the artists who became known for his etchings and watercolors of
sailboats. Later, they moved into Mystic where her mother ran a popular nursery
school for many years. Because Martha's family of four sisters were raised
on an artist's income, they learned to "make do" from an early age, and sewing
and knitting became prerequisites.
Education was equally important, so Martha went on to
Brown University, after which she taught nursery school for 10
years, managed a gourmet cuisine at Blueberry Hill Inn (Goshen,
Vermont) for 13 years, and has been an active member of the Middlebury Farmer's
Market in Vermont for 11 years. She stresses that she uses her
creative ways to circumvent the complacency in her craft. Her unique
designs are out of the ordinary, and each piece is made by hand. She
prefers to work with a customer, creating what she or he has in mind, and then
adds her personal suggestions. Please click on the additional site pages
