At the IHSA state meet today in Peoria, Hinsdale Central junior Billy Fayette earned a 60th place finish, completing the 3.0 mile course in 15:26. Fayette moved up 90 places from his 150th finish of a year ago. Nequa Valley won the meet over pre-race favorite Loyola and perennial challenger York. Congratulations to Billy on an excellent season, and to the returning runners: the quest for state in 2010 begins today!

Devil's Come up Just Short at Sectionals; Fayette on to StateIt was a tough way to end the season, but despite a hard-fought battle at Lockport's Dellwood Park, the Hinsdale Central Red Devil's ended up 6th place at Saturday's Sectional Race, one position away from earning an invitation to the IHSA state meet being held at Peoria's Detweiller Park on November 7th. The team could take a small measure of solace in knowing that they performed to the best of their ability and that junior Billy Fayette will represent the team next week. Sadly, senior Arash Darbandi finished one position away from earning a trip downstate as the final individual qualifier. As they have all year, Fayette and Darbandi led the Devils - Fayette finishing 17th and Darbandi 25th. These two leaders were joined by a fine supporting cast which included #3 man Joe Berg who closed out an impressive senior season with a 40th place finish as well as Sophomore standouts Ted Owens (42nd) and Jack Feldman (47th). Rounding out the top 7 were junior Pete Stubbings (61st) and senior Nick Tyson (71st).Nequa Valley won the meet in impressive fashion, while conference rival Lyons Township ran strong for 2nd. Sandburg High School and Lockport Township high school took the next two spots, while Plainfield South earned the final invitation downstate, finishing 5th with 150 points, 15 ahead of the Devils. Fayette will join these teams downstate and will seek to improve upon his performance of one year ago. Seniors Berg and Tyson will look to seek redemption in the coming track season, while the teams underclassmen will look to build upon this year's successes and experiences. The 2009 Red Devil's will be remembered as a team full of ordinary athletes who worked extraordinarily hard - The top 7 included two athletes who weren't even on the team last year, and four athletes who hadn't run faster than 4:58 for the 1600 in the previous year. Despite the lack of obvious talent, these gentleman came within a hair's breadth of earning a trip downstate, a goal which will remain paramount for the 2010 season.

October 24 - Devils Second at Regionals
In perhaps their strongest race of the season thus far, the Red Devils finished 2nd place at Saturday's IHSA Regional Cross Country competition, hosted by Lyons Township High School. On a muddy, mucky course, Hinsdale placed 5 runners in the top 16 to finish as the runner-up behind Lyons Township (currently ranked #6 in state by dyestat.com). For the first time this season, the Devils defeated conference rivals Downers Grove North, though the two teams will do battle once again next weekend at Sectionals. Also qualifying for the sectional meet were the squads from Downers Grove South and Hinsdale South.
Billy Fayette and Arash Darbandi both ran excellent races, earning all-regionals honors by finishing in the top 5. Fayette took charge and led much of the race, along with Mike Moore of Lyons Township, before the two were overtaken by eventual winner Ben Silver near the two mile mark. On this day, Moore bested Fayette in the final straightaway, and the junior runner took a terrific third, improving on his regional place from a year ago by 12 spots! Senior Darbandi used a different strategy, hanging back for the first 1000 meters before steadily moving up throughout the race and closing hard to earn a fourth place finish.
The Devils received a huge boost from junior Pete Stubbings who continued his breakthrough season by placing 10th overall, just ahead of Andrew Montague and Brian Llamas of Downers Grove North. Sophomore Ted Owens and Senior Joe Berg ran together for much of the race and finished shortly after Stubbings, taking the 15th and 16th spots. Rounding out the top 7 for the Devils were Sophomore Jack Feldman in 22nd and Senior Kyle Henshaw in 26th.
The Devils look to put in another week of solid training before heading to Dellwood Park in Lockport for the Sectional Meet on Halloween Day. In what will surely be a highly competitive meet, Hinsdale will look to finish among the top 5 teams to achieve a major goal for the season: a return invitation to the State Championship meet.

WSC Silver Championship - Saturday, October 17
Each year the WSC Championship serves as a highlight for the Red Devil cross country program. It is an opportunity to race against great programs and their respective athletes. Oak Park, LT, York, DGN are highly regarded programs and the Hinsdale Central harriers cherish the opportunity to knock elbows with the best. At every level the men raced with grit, integrity, courage and represented the Hinsdale Central program with honor. The coaching staff is very proud of the way the guys responded on Saturday. Great job gentlemen.
Varsity
In a loaded field, the Red Devil’s competed well and raced hard over the 2.91 course at Camera Park. Leading the charge and continuing his terrific season, junior Billy Fayette put himself in great position early and raced hard finishing in 9th place overall thus securing All-Conference honors. Following Fayette and returning to the line-up was senior Arash Darbandi, also earning All-Conference honors, finishing 15th place overall. Senior Joe Berg continued his steady season by finishing a respectable 23rd place followed by junior Pete Stubbings (30th) and senior Alex Stec (33rd). Rounding out the top 7 for the Red Devil’s were seniors Nick Tyson (35th) and Drew Justus (38th). The team finished 5th place overall with a point total of 110. Nice job men.
Junior Varsity
Many PR’s were had along with outstanding runs by a plethora of juniors and seniors. Senior Kyle Henshaw returned to excellent form by racing to an overall 13th place. Kyle was followed by senior teammate T.J. Collanto (24th), and juniors Brad Somerfield (26th), Azad Darbandi (34th), and Matt Kane (48th). Rounding out the top 7 was senior Andy Tuggle (57th) and junior Jeff Somerfield (64th). Well done guys.
Sophomores
Led by an outstanding run and runner-up finish, Ted Owens led the men to an overall 4th place finish in a tightly bunched team race. Jack Feldman raced to an impressive 5th place as Tom Lyons also finished well in 12th place. All three men earned All-Conference honors. Arjun Reddy (27th) and Neil Pedersen (30th), both of whom experienced some untimely illness and injury, competed hard and rounded out the top 5 for the Red Devils. Rounding out the top 7 for the sophomores were Dan Chan (41st) and David Moran (64th). Great season men.
Freshmen
Without the services of Dylan Palo and Stephen Tyson (both under the weather) the freshmen stepped up and raced very well to earn a close 4th place team finish. Only 5 points separated the 2nd and 4th place teams on this day! Finishing in 10th place overall was front-runner Forrester Evertsen. Just behind Forrester was a season improving Brendan Eng (14th). Both men earned All-Conference honors. Michael Korompilas (19th), Alex Grote (25th), and Rajan Khanna (30th) all had solid performances and finished out their season well. Rounding out the top 7 for the Red Devils was Ryan Somerfield (56th) and Elliot Martin (75th). Terrific season guys.
- October 8 - Devil's Travel to Schiller Woods for Final Regular Season Meet
At the final conference meet of the season, the Red Devils faced off against Glenbard West and state ranked Oak Park River Forest. The Varsity team and Freshman team both earned splits, while the Sophomores, running without top runners Arjun Reddy and Jack Feldman were outpaced on this day by both teams. Both runners took a day of cross training to rest mild aches, but should be running at full strength for the Conference championship race, to be held a week from Saturday at Camera Park in Glendale Heights. Running without his usual companions, Ted Owens had a solid race for the Sophomore squad, finishing 3rd overall and finishing ahead of last year's freshman conference champion, Mike Lederhouse of Glenbard West. Tom Lyons also had a great race, finishing 8th overall in 17:07. A surprise third-man for the Devils was Dan Chan who continued to show impressive signs of improvement by setting a personal record of 18:09. Neil Pedersen was one second behind Chan, while David Moran rounded out the top 5 with a solid performance of 18:34.
For the Varsity, junior Billy Fayette picked up his second victory of the season, running in the lead from start to finish. Fayette crossed the line in 16:16. Peter Stubbings continued his impressive season with a 9th place finish of 16:34 to be second man for the squad, while Joe Berg (16:47), Alex Stec (16:53), and Zach Withall (16:55) completed the scoring five. Notable performances were also turned in by Nick Tyson, who is battling back from an injury and ran tough to finish at the Devil's 8th man in 17:13, and by Mike Kanter, a senior member of the squad, who has been a team-member for all four years of high school. Kanter beat his previous best time on this course by a team best 1:39 to finish his final high school dual meet in impressive style. Not bad for a guy who couldn't break 7:00 for the mile as a freshman!
And speaking of the Freshman, the team was only 3 points away from beating Glenbard West, and easily handled OPRF in their final meet before conference. Leading the way for the Devils were Dylan Palo and Forrester Eversten who finished 4th and 5th. A string of Devil's followed in the chute next, with Brendan Eng crossing the line in 8th, followed closely by Mike Korompilas, Alex Grote, and Steve Tyson.

October 3 - Men traveled to Montrose Harbor for 37th Annual Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Cross Country Invitational/13th Annual Bill Bradna High School Division
Chicago’s scenic lakefront served as a beautiful backdrop for Saturday’s 37th Annual Sean Earl/Bill Bradna Loyola Lakefront Invitational. A big field, which included the likes of #1 state-ranked Loyola Academy, an excellent Lyons Township squad, a tough Minooka program, and a young up and coming Plainfield South team.
On the varsity level, the Red Devil’s battled hard and grinded out a tough 5 kilometer course to finish a very respectable 6th place out of a 32 team field. Leading the way for the men and running a gritty race was junior Billy Fayette who finished up 11th (16:38) in a star-studded field. Following Fayette were seniors Joe Berg (17:11) and Alex Stec (17:30), who both ran hard and battled all the way. Closely behind Stec were juniors Pete Stubbings (17:34) and senior Drew Justus (17:36) and rounding out the top 7 on the day were junior Zach Withall (17:48) and senior Jordan Anetsberger (17:58). Way to tough it out gentlemen.
In the Open event, Red Devil junior harrier Matt Kane, who continues to make excellent improvement, led the way and finished an overall 9th place in 18:37 and was followed by a 12th place finish in junior Bill Grimm (18:46). Both men were followed by nice runs from junior Jeff Somerfield (19:01), seniors Sam Scully (19:54), and Alfredo Lopez-Yanez (20:03). Rounding out the top 7 in this race were junior Jin Kim (20:18) and senior Michael Mortimer (20:19). The men finished an excellent 4th place in the 16 team field. Great job guys!
In the Boys Frosh/Soph race, the Red Devil’s continue to impress as they held off a resurging Glenbard West team to take home 1st place honors by the slightest of margins. Out strong from the get go, the men established their positions and, as it turns out, had a real battle on their hands. Stepping it up a notch was Jack Feldman who poured it on and finished a terrific 3rd place overall (17:15), only 6 seconds behind the eventual winner. Jack was followed closely by an excellent run from Ted Owens (5th in 17:21) and teammate Tom Lyons strong finish (13th in 17:55). Arjun Reddy and Neil Pedersen rounded out the top 5 for the team (15th & 17th respectively) which proved to be the difference in the overall team scoring. Rounding out the top 7 were freshmen Brendan Eng (18:48) and sophomore David Moran (19:29). Excellent run men!

Running without usual #3 man Forrester Evertsen, the Devil's got some much needed help from Mike Korompilas (5th), birthday-boy Alex Grote (7th), and Steven Tyson (8th). These three runners held off Downers' 4-5-6 runners to secure the victory. Dylan Palo and Brendan Eng led the way for the Devil's, finish 2nd and 3rd, while Elliot Martin and Rajan Khanna rounded out the top 7. A final highlight for the Devil's was the performance of Khalid Nognog, who competed in and completed a cross country race for the first time in his life. Way to go, Khalid!

All current varsity runners are encouraged to examine and consider this analysis. It suggests that this year's team has the potential to be one of the strongest in Hinsdale history.Meet Results | News Clip | Photos
