Composting

Co-Chair: Jerry Fitzpatrick

Co-Chair: Susan Levi-Goerlich

From April through October, MGs provide education about backyard composting at 4 demonstration sites in the County: Alpha Ridge Landfill, Centennial Park, Howard County Conservancy at Mt. Pleasant, and Schooley Mill Park

  • We answer questions about composting and other gardening issues
  • We distribute FREE composting bins to County residents
  • In 2009, we distributed more than 250 bins to residents
  • Most demonstrations are from 9 to 11 AM on Saturdays; Centennial Park and Schooley Mill Park sites also have evening demonstrations
  • Vermicomposting demonstrations take place at the Schooley Mill Park site
  • Members of the committee are available to speak to interested groups about composting and have developed PowerPoint slide presentations suitable for adults and children
  • Unparalleled opportunity to do rewarding one-on-one education – and to meet a variety of interesting folks while enjoying the outdoors.

Useful downloadable files on composting

posted Jan 12, 2011 8:41 AM by Kent Phillips

I have added two downloadable files to the compost area of the wiki.  The first is a Excel spreadsheet which can be used to calculate the carbon to nitrogen ratio of compost piles.  To use it, just follow the instructions at the top of the spreadsheet.

The second file is a PowerPoint presentation which I am going to give to the 2011 Howard County MG intern class on Jan 31.  Feel free to download, modify and use it at any presentation you give on composting.

If you have any questions, plese call me at the number below.
