For most of us reading poetry is about passion, about a lack of rules, about the subjective reading experience. As the inspirational Mr. Keating, Robin Williams' character in Dead Poet's Society, might exclaim, "Carpe Diem! Sieze the Day! Suck the marrow from life! Drink it to its lees!"
I only wish that we were all so motivated and inspired by the muse to read tons of poetry passionately, but, unfortunately, we live in an age of prose and few of us know how to access our inner poet. But fear not, gentle reader, poetry (and reading poetry) is an art and a science. Therefore, there are methods for us to break the "adamantine chains" that bar us from understanding the bard. We do risk becoming a bit like Dr. J. Evans Pritchard. (See the clip below) But if we seek a happy medium of inspiration and perspiration, poetry can be available to us, too.
