In preparation Before I arrive please make sure your sheep are in a small enclosure or pen, or tethered in the yard. Sheep become quite used to their owners and will walk up to them no problem, however strangers are a different story. There will be an extra charge if I have to catch your sheep. It is beneficial to pen or halter your sheep once in a while to get them accustomed to the feeling, so that when shearing, lambing, or other medical attention is needed they feel moderately comfortable in that situation. Experience In April 2005 I attended Washington State University's Sheep Shearing program in Moses Lake, Washington. The 5-day course provided hands-on training in shearing and basic information on sheep care. Since then I have sheared for six sheep farms on the Big Island and two in Washington State. Hoof trimming is included. Some experience shearing goats as well. References available upon request. About me I am currently pursuing my PhD in Geography at the University of Hawaii Manoa. My research focuses on agricultural and community change on the Hamakua Coast, the viability of agriculture, and social networks. |
