1 in 3 classes at Bates incorporate a service-learning component with the community. From teaching in the local schools for an education class, to testing water pollution of the Androscoggin as part of a bio class, Bates students across campus are reaching out to the community through their academic pursuits.

Community-based research initiatives take place in a variety of majors and community settings... history majors documenting the heritage of French-Canadian mill workers; econ majors studying the effects of immigration on the local economy; sociology majors analyzing the impact of community gardens.
