What Would you Have Done?

What Would You Have Done?

Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. "Dont' be frightened Mary," the angel told her, "for God has decided to bless you! You will become pregnant and have a son, and you are to name him Jesus.  He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High "......Mary asked the angel, "But how can I have a baby I am a virgin?"  The angel replied, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow  you.  So the baby born to you will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God."

Luke 1:29-35

Wow!  I don't know about you but if an angel came to me when I was around 14 years old and told me I was going to become pregnant with God's Son, I would have checked my self into the local funny farm.  At the very least I would have said, "no thank you!"  Do you realize what Mary was asked to do?  Not just have a baby that would be considered illegitimate at the time, or tell the man that she was suppose to marry that she was pregnant by the Holy Spirit.  But she had to give birth to God's Son, raise Him and then watch Him be rejected and suffer and die on a cross.  Now that is what I call faith!

Again, I think I would have said, "No thank you. Maybe the girl down the street could do it."

Sometimes God asks us to do things that are pretty difficult.  One of those things is to be different.  He asks us to go against what the world wants us to do and do what He wants us to do.  That can be really hard.  People might make fun of us, or think that we are crazy (like they did with Mary). They might want nothing to do with us even reject us (like they did with Jesus).  It is never easy to stand up for what you believe in especially when God asks us to do difficult things (Like forgive one another, love your enemies, not conform to this world, be honest, help all who ask for help, give up sleeping in to worship Him on Sunday mornings, etc. Yes the list is long).  And many times we can't figure out the reason why He asks us to do these things.  Mary sure must have had a lot of questions and Joseph too.  But they had faith and as you know everything worked for God's Good Plan.  As a Christian you have been chosen for God's Good Plan too.  You may not see it now but if you try to do those difficult things that He asks of you, you too will be in same company as Mary and Joseph and Jesus when God's Plan is fulfilled. And that is where we all want to be!

So when God asks you to handle difficult things and make tough decisions, say what Mary said, " I am the Lord's servant, and I am willing to accept whatever He wants."  Luke 1:38
