To My Friend
by Kathryn Pigg

In all my hearing about God
somehow I got the idea
that the Christian life
was solitary
God-and-I-against-the-world
sort of operation
with me doing all the work.

Then because I couldn't
make it in the world
by all my works,
I called to God
and I heard Him
not just about Him;

and my solitary life
was not suffient.
I needed to reach
outside myself to share
the love of God
who loved me first.

I had been alone so long
and my fears were many,
but my faith
nourished by His presence
sustained my faltering efforts
as again and again
He provided for my needs.

I guess my greatest fear
was that when I really
opened up my heart to you
you would find out
about the darkness
that I felt inside.

But I have come to feel
that if God can love
the darkness of this world
enough to send us light,
maybe we can rise above our sin
and love this world the way
God meant us to: together.
