Yati Pranava Kalpa

-by Sri Madhvacharya

(Translated to Kannada by Vidvan Anada thirtha Sampangi. translated to English by Madhukrishna.)

As told in scriptures one should do the rituals with the help of sammit, charu and Ajya reciting Purusha sukta. Thinking the well being of every living being, having complete detachment take up the sainthood, which is very dear to the God.

He should listen to Srimad Bhagavatam –which mainly teaches detachment from material world and Supremacy of the Lord from Guru. He should surrender to the Guru asking him to teach science of Brahman. Guru should teach truth to disciple who has come in search of Brahman and engage him in studies.

Guru should chant Pranava (Om) three times in the right ear of the disciple. Then teach him the sage, deity and meter of the Mantra.

The form the God who is within our body and who sustains us is the sage of Pranava. Gayatri is the meter, Godhead himself is the presiding deity, Universe, luminescence, knowledge and liberation – these four forms of the God are the deities for Aa, Uu, Ma and Nada which form the four letters of Pranava.

Krishna, Rama, Narasimha, Varaha, Visnu, Paranjyoti, Parabrahma, Vasudeva – like this eight forms of the God from Santa to Ati Shanta respectively.

Like this teaching the significance of Pranava, Guru should teach the disciple the method to meditate on the Lord who is revealed through Pranava.

In the eight petal lotus heart of the body is located the solar system, lunar system and the fire system. One should meditate on Narayana who is located at the centre of this crown.

He is far from all defects, he is golden coloured like the rising Sun, he is brighter than thousand Suns, he is full of auspicious qualities and knowledge.

He is having lotus coloured feet, his nails are glittering with shining, he is having beautiful round knee, thigh like that of an elephant trunk.

He is wearing the yellow Kanchi peetambara, he is having deep Nabhi and beautiful three lines formed on the stomach.

He is having vast chest wearing Kaustuba beeds, garlands of Vanamala and Vijayanti.

He is having four shoulders holding conch, disk, mace and Padma. He is having wide eyes like just blossomed lotus. He is wearing glittering ear-rings.

His face is brighter than thousand full moons, eyebrows are pleasing to the mind and forehead is beautiful. He is wearing crown over the head.

One should meditate on such Narayana who is remover of all miseries, who is always full of happiness, who is having that beautiful smile and who is the sustainers of whole universe.

One should meditate on universe, luminescence, knowledge and liberation –four forms, Krishna, Rama and other forms of the God who is having above described qualities and who is not different from all powerful supreme Visnu who is the giver of boons and support.

Having taught the method of meditation the disciple should be made to take three times oath like this “I will never leave all powerful and supreme Visnu and his devotees, I will never think about the equality or one ness between Brahma, other deities and the Lord. I will never associate with those who tell the equality or oneness between soul and the God, those who are enemies of the God or enemies of his devotees”.

After taking the oath, keeping the hand on the disciple’s head Guru should give the blessing as follows “Crossing this ocean of transmigration move towards divine, become dear to Lord, having overcome all the miseries, attaining the ever blissful form of yours- the liberated state, which is most near to the God and there also be a devotee of Lord Hari.

Along with worshiping Brahma and other deities, also understand the hierarchy among them. Understanding Lord Hari as the Supreme among deities be happy. Don’t think of oneness or equality of Lord Visnu and others even after liberation.

Everyday without break do the worship of Lord Hari, meditation and other duties and offer it to the Lord. For saints chanting three thousand times Pranava is considered as optimum. More than three thousand is considered as best, Minimum is one thousand.

Thinking yourself as reflection of Lord Hari, thinking the similarity in qualities, worship Lord Hari. Non stop, meditating on the Lord revealed by Pranava, keep the mind and other sense organs in Him, worship the Lord with mental flowers like non-violence, etc. and also with beautiful flowers like Parijata, Mallige and Sampige. Meditate on maha vishnava mantras like Hayagriva, Vedavyasa and Varaha.

Note: non-violence, control over senses, kindness towards all animals, pardoning, knowledge, penance, meditation and truth are the eight mental flowers that should be offered to Lord.

Listen to the scriptures which inform you about the supremacy of Lord Hari. Do a deep study of Upanishad and Vedas. Study the puranas and pancharatra and get a firm conviction of their knowledge by interpreting them with the help of Brahmasutras. Spread the supremacy of Lord Hari everywhere.
