Puranic reference to Srimad Anandatirtha

Greetings to all on the occasion of Madhvanavami.

This special day is mentioned in some purANas, in the course of mentioning our master, Srimad Anandatiirtha. As you may be knowing, Srimad Acharya himself indicates, towards the end of MBTN (32.122-135), that purANAs and the Pancharatras, in addition to the vedas, talk of vAyu's birth (and also of other pANDavas) in the kali yuga.

Sri Vijayiindra tiirtha mentions some such quotes in his 'madhvamatamukhabhUShaNaM' in response to Appayya Dikshita's claim that Shankaracharya is a 'purANically-recognized' Apta. Some of the quotes Sri Vijayindra Tiirtha gives are mentioned below. Sri V.Prabhanjanacharya has also given some quotes, collated from different sources, in the footnotes on MBTN 32.125 in his edition of the same. I have included some quotes from there too.

The point here is to show that the quotes here are not vague, like in the case of Gaudiiya's claim of 'suvarNa varNo hemAN^go' to refer to Chaitanya, and refer unambiguously (when taken collectively) to refer to Srimad Anandatiirtha only. Also, it must be noted that the chapter references given below are from Sri Vijayindra tiirtha himself, that too in response to the person who was the first to talk about 'aprasiddha' shrutis (in the same work). For me, this implies that the quotes were indeed extant at the time of their mention, though they might not be found now (some can be found). This is very unlike of some quotes given by the gauDIyas in support of Chaitanya's svaruupa. Their only argument is to seek a MoU (memo of understanding) wherein we are expected to accept their quotes just because they accept (actually are forced to, given their paramparA) quotes given by Srimad Anandatiirtha. They don't realize that this is not good for them, given Srimad Anandatiirtha's doctrine re absence of differences between Lord's ruupas, among other things.

Here're some of the quotes. I have also excluded the oft-quoted garuDapurANa quote from the brahmakANDa, 16th adhyAya.

This one mentions that vAyu's avataara will be a sannyAsi by the name of madhva and that he will write commentaries on gItA and Upanishads.

This talks of Vayu's avatara in a brAhmaNa's house in parashurAma kShetra and with the name of 'Anandatiirtha.

6. brahmANDapurANaM (rajatapIThamAhAtmye)

hanumadbhImamadhvAkhyA trayo vAyusutA ime |

taM madhvamArutaM sarve parivAratayA sadA |

saMsevituM surA bhUmAvavateruriti shrutam.h |

te cha tachChiShyatAM prApya tanmArgaM samadhopayan.h |

teShu mukhyau viShNutIrthapadmanAbhAkhyayoginau |

atyaktadehastatrAdyaH pravartayati tanmatam.h |

badaryAM vyAsadevokto guroH prItyai punaH kalau ||

This speaks of Sri Madhva having Sri Vishnutiirtha and Sri Padmanabha tiirtha as disciples (and also of return of Sri Vishnutiirtha to reinstate the philosophy).

7. vAyupurANam

vAyorAj~nAM puraskR^itya maNibhadraH sa eva hi |

madhyagehasya bhAryAyaM praveshaM kR^itavAn.h prabhuH |

navamAsAvasAne tu svayaM gatvA balAtmakaH |

bahirniShkAsayAmAsa nataM jIvaM tathaiva hi |

svayaM pravesha kR^itavAn.h prANadevo mahAbalaH |

This tells us of Sri Vayu's birth in Sri Madhyageha's family.

8. skandapurANaM (uttarakhaNDe)

evaM tamasi saMprApte brahmarudrAdayastadA |

sharaNyaM sharaNaM jagmurvAsudevamanAmayam.h |

tasyAj~nayA mahAbAhurvAyuH sarvasurottamaH |

raupyapIThe madhyagehe nirvikAro.apyajAyata |

sanakAdimahAyogisaMpradAyakaro yatiH |

achyutaprexanAmA.asau mAyibhiH pariveShTitaH |

... prApya sa madhvaH paramahaMsarAT.h |

tataH shArIrakaM shrutvA nirAchakre mahAprabhuH |

ekaviMshatkubhAShyANi pradUShyAgamatarkataH |

shrImatsubrahmasUtrANAM bhAShyaM chakre paraM tataH |

shrImatgaN^gAtaTe viShNuM sthApayedyo narottamaH |

vedavyAsAj~nayA sarvaM shubhaM chakre mahAmatiH ||

This speaks of Sri Vayu being born near raupapITha, in Sri madhyageha's family and writing commentaries on Brahmasutras and the Mahabharata-taatparya grantha.

This quote is different from others in its usage of past tense, thereby excluding the possibility of somebody in future taking up a name of madhyageha, naming his son as 'madhva' and getting him to write commentaries on giita, upanishads and brahmasuutra. As such, it is impossible to perform feats befitting a vAyu avataara. How often does one find a person lifting a stone (of nearly 20*15*10 cu.ft; I heard) with one hand, and placing it in the middle of a river; one who could eat, leave alone digesting, 2000 bananas in one shot; and one who had all the 32 laxaNas including a height of 8 ft? And this is in addition to the extra-ordinary capability of covering a wide-array of subjects such as epistemology, ontology, liturgy, iconography pulling out relevant quotes from the vedas and their shakhAs, the mahAbhArata etc without erring even once?

This speaks of Srimad Acharya going to Badari on mAgha-shukla-navami.

10. a nADI grantha quoted by Dr.R.N.Sharma:
