In the winter and spring of 2010,
EVERY HARDY STUDENT in their weekly art class was involved in creating artwork for the spring all-school art show which represented the Hardy School Core Values: Love of Learning, Academic Success, Self-Confidence, and Sense of Community.

Our goal was to have each class create one artwork that is on permanent display in the hallways of the school! The unveiling of these artworks was the focus of that year's art show.

Many of the grades had begun working on their projects by brainstorming ideas about the core values and learning about artists and artwork that the projects will be based on. Our principal Deb D'Amico had even come into the third, fourth, and fifth graders' art classes to discuss the core values and brainstorm ideas with the students!

The new Hardy School Core Values were created in the 2008-2009 school year by a committee comprised of the principal, teachers, and parents.
Thanks to the Hardy PTO, parents, and Deb D'Amico for their support!

Projects

Kindergarten
Kindergarten students are creating projects based on the core value community. The classes will read books illustrated by Eric Carle and discuss the meaning of "texture" and how it is created in artwork. The classes will create a collage of a community of people using paper that they have textured and painted, similar to how Carle created his own illustrations.

Grade 1
Grade 1 students are creating projects based on the core value community. The classes will learn about Australian Aboriginal dot art and incorporate it into a mixed-media collage using paint and paper. The final artwork is a large dot painting of a school of fish. Each student designed their own fish and the whole class contributed to dot painting the water in the background.

Grade 2
Grade 2 students are creating projects based on the core values community and self-confidence. They will learn about Mandalas, Japanese calligraphy, and the artwork of Romare Bearden and incorporate all those diverse ideas into a beautiful mixed-media project. The final project will be a large painting of a Mandala with collage self-portraits and the Japanese Kanji symbol for "self-confidence" throughout the piece.

Grade 3
Grade 3 students are creating projects based on all four core values. They will learn about various quilts, including ones from Gee's Bend, Alabama and ones created by Faith Ringgold. For the final piece the students will create their own quilt squares, incorporating one or all four of the core values, that will be sewn into a class quilt.

Grade 4
Grade 4 students are creating projects based on the core value academic success. The classes will create artwork on paper and canvas that incorporates traditional printmaking. The students will create their own print and will glue them all in a grid on a canvas to create an Andy Warhol style relief print.

Grade 5
Grade 5 students are creating projects based on the core value love of learning. Each class will create a mosaic using ceramic tiles that portrays that value.
