The Guild sponsors the Adelaide Royal Show competition prizes

in spinning, weaving and related crafts.


Members and other interested craftsmen and women are encouraged to enter the competition classes of their interest.

We have revised the competition categories that are sponsored by the Guild for 2011. 

We welcome feedback about how well the competition classes work and any suggestions to improve the competition. All suggestions must be received by early October 2011 if changes are to be made for the 2012 Competition.

  • Entry forms for the competition, available from the Adelaide Royal Show's website, are due by early July. 
  • Exhibits must be delivered to the Royal Show in late August for judging before being put on display in the Handicrafts Hall.

Novice Classes:

Spinning:  2 Skeins (each 50g, medium and bulky) of handspun sheep’s wool. Include a sample of unscoured fleece.

Weaving: any article using predominantly natural fibre/s, no more than four shaft loom to be used.

Knitted Vest: made from handspun wool, using natural and/or dyed colours.

The Adelaide Hills Spinners & Weavers Guild provides a prize
for the best display in this group.


Spinning Classes:

Spinning Perfection, three skeins, (50 grams each, fine, medium and bulky), handspun from any natural fibre/s, emphasis placed on perfection of spinning. Include samples of unspun fibres used. First $20; second $10; third $5.

Spinning/Dyeing, two skeins (50 grams each), of handspun yarn from any natural fibre/s with emphasis placed on dyeing ability and colour. Use a different type of dye for each skein. Include samples of unspun fibre/s used and state type of dye and method application. First $20; second $10; third $5.

Spinning (Creative, Novelty), one skein only (50 grams) of handspun yarn. No restrictions. Include samples of unspun fibre/s used to construct your yarn. First $20; second $10; third $5.

Weaving Classes:

Weaving, dress or coat length, not less than 2300 mm material only. Any yarn, any fibre content. First $20; second $10; third $5.

Weaving, stole or scarf, woven from any yarn, any fibre content. First $20; second $10; third $5.

Weaving, any article, using handspun fibre only. First $20; second $10; third $5.

Weaving, any article, using any yarn, any fibre/s. First $20; second $10; third $5.

Garment Classes:

Garment, knitted or crocheted, using any natural handspun fibre. One colour, natural or dyed. Bulky yarn – equivalent to 8 ply or more. First $20; second $10; third $5.

Garment, knitted or crocheted, using any natural handspun fibre/s one colour, natural or dyed. Fine yarn – equivalent to 5 ply or less. First $20; second $10; third $5.

Garment, knitted or crocheted using any natural handspun fibre, mixed colours, natural and/or dyed. First $20; second $10; third $5.

Garment, using two or more techniques (knitted, crocheted, woven etc.) employing at least 50% hand spun yarn, natural or dyed colours. First $20; second $10; third $5.

Garment, woven, made from any commercial and/or hand spun natural fibre/s, natural or dyed colours. First $20; second $10; third $5.

Homeware/Home Accessory, e.g. towel, place mat, cushion, table runner, tea cosy, curtain, apron using any technique, from any commercial and/or hand spun natural fibre/s, natural or dyed colours. First $20; second $10; third $5.

Sculptural Form, e.g. hat, bowl, tea cosy, toy, abstract/conceptual, using any technique, natural fibre/s hand spun or commercial yarns, as appropriate. Natural or dyed colours. First $20; second $10; third $5.
