Hance Family Update
Updated 11/5/09
Halloween 2009! Nick was a firefighter for Halloween this year. He thought he would be a pumpkin, but when he saw this set of pajamas at the store, it was all over. We went to a kid-friendly Halloween party at an art gallery in our neighborhood, then trick-or-treated our downtown area of St. John's. After that Nick was pooped, but he still managed to greet every trick-or-treater at our door with an enthusiastic "Happy Halloween!!!" - sans pants, as this was also a potty-training week. Everyone got a treat that night! The summer and fall have been busy here at the Hance household. Nick started preschool at our community center two mornings a week. Fortunately, he gets to go there with his best friend Will. Other times we hang out with Will and his mom, go to museums or the Zoo, or play at our community cooperative SwapnPlay. Will and Nick on a walk I'm working 10 to 20 hours a week on a contract with Kaiser Permanente, helping them develop online annual mandatory training for nurses. Nick spends a couple of mornings a week with my wonderful friend Jonna so I can get some work done, and every couple of weeks he spends a day with Grandpop Burns. His favorite things to do with Grandpop are to go look at trains in the train yard, eat at "Old McDonald's", and play at the playground. We had a couple of home projects this summer. First, we gutted our old kitchen down to the studs and installed new cabinets, countertop, sink, backsplash, dishwasher, and finally moved the fridge into the kitchen! The kitchen had never been remodeled; when we pulled the old cast-iron kitchen sink out, the date "1913" was stamped on it. It is so beautiful now! New Kitchen We also redid Nick's room to match his new big-boy Thomas the Tank Engine bed. We still have to threaten the return of the crib from time to time, but he loves to sleep in his bed! Nick's Big Boy Room It's 5:15 and pitch black here in the Pacific Northwest, so I guess that means I better get the boy up from a nap and get dinner on the table. Look for more updates soon! Kate |

It is really wonderful to have our family close to us, and Nick loves being with his grandparents. I'm working part-time from home for Kaiser Permanente doing some contract instructional design, which I thoroughly enjoy. Nick and I have a wonderful time going to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, the Zoo, Pump It Up, and SwapnPlay. Dad's CornerWell, so much for a relaxing winter. I've honestly never shovelled so much snow, but it looks like spring is on the way. And with Spring, comes "The Projects". Stay tuned for the kitchen remodel - that would create some impressive pictures of household destruction!
