HONDURAS
Case Study:  Honduras Facility Master Plan
In 2003-2004 SCW developed a National School Facility Master Plan. This plan was developed for the Ministry of Education and involved advisors and program managers [Matthew DeJong & Amanda Hoffsis-Holycross] from the United States, several Honduran architectural and engineering students and over 400 Honduran military personnel. The project involved finding and inventorying the condition of 12,901 schools and 20,204 buildings. A web site was developed which has information on the condition of most of the schools in the country as of 2003.
The results of the assessments show that 61% of all of the schools have no electricity, 25% have no running water. Most schools [69%] have less than three classrooms and there are only a handful of libraries [770] and science labs [297] in the entire country. The web site includes a national report, reports of each 18 departments and 298 municipios , More information can be found at www.HondurasPlanMaestro.com. This information has been used by NGO's and Governments in effort to understand areas of need.
