Tulane University has been working in Haiti for decades. There are several projects there now, but one, the University Technical Assistance Project, based in the Center for Global Health Equity in the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine has an office and staff there. Our Country Project Director and Tulane employee, Mrs. Christine Duchatellier-Fowler, her husband Paul, and her 8 month old daughter Victoria are evacuated and arriving in New Orleans February 1. All of our Haitian local hire staff are accounted for and physically uninjured. Needless to say, all are in shock.
This wiki was originally developed to report on our staff in Haiti, and our efforts to reach them. It also lists some organizations collecting money for the relief effort. Since then it serves as an informal channel of communication and documentation, especially for School of Public Health staff. Anyone can view this site, which is unofficial and personal. It is not meant to replace Tulane's official Haiti website, or the Payson Center website. All of you who have been invited as collaborators or owners are welcome to keep updating it, and the Center will continue to post announcements. The site also reports from the weekly Tuesday noon meeting of the Tulane-Haiti Public Health Emergency Taskforce in Tidewater 1192. All are welcome to attend this meeting.
Given Tulane's commitment to Haiti, as mentioned in President Cowen's Tulane Talk, Tulane's resources in development, public health, medicine and education, and our city's tragic experience with Hurricane Katrina, we hope that these initial small, small efforts will grow into a role for Tulane in Haiti's recovery and development.Carl Kendall January 28, 2010
