Free Hit Counter RECAP (20 June)
Haiku Society of America National Quarterly Meeting/Bend Haiku Weekend
3-5 June, 2011
The historic Liberty Theatre 849 NW Wall Street, Bend, OregonLet us start back at the
beginning .... In late January
2011, haiku Oregon received the word that we could host a Quarterly National
Haiku Society of America (HSA) Meeting if we wanted to, it was immediately
accepted, and we began to work that same hour, to bring this event to Bend,
Oregon. In a short 4 1/2 months we created the event way too fast, for a first year event, in a strange town... so, a lot of the planned features, and a large part of the attendance were left out of the program.
an'ya and PeterB live 50 miles outside of Bend, so this entire event (from start to finish) was built online, by email, and the digital relay of information ... only three antiquated telephone calls were used in five months!! (two, were emergency calls, re: our plumber on Saturday (event-morning) to get the toilet working !)
The response, assistance, enthusiasm and
aggressive hustle of the local Bend community, and businesses for this event,
from the Mayor (who proclaimed it Bend Haiku Weekend), the Liberty Theatre, our lodging, food and drink suppliers, VisitBend, the Downtown Bend Business Association and our Haiku Oregon Members brought this
event not only to Bend, but to fruition as well... Great job !
(pan all the way to the bottom and keep checking back) ... because we will be making many-many additions to this website almost daily
! the process is slow, but, we should have a full recap and photo-slide show completed around mid-late July. note: DONE !
5 June, late-night; event-over. This computer has been
off line now for 5 days while being used at the LlBERTY
but, we are now back online ! The Circus tent comes down ! hear the poles
?
it's over
tent poles clanging in the
night

The Liberty Theatre is now dark, the haiku wall is
headed to Seattle for
re-presentation at the Haiku North America
Convention in August, the Artists have all emptied their booths, and the book table
is empty, ... by tomorrow this time, the Liberty Theatre will be once again
empty, and the street side windows curtained (as they have been for the last ten
years), she will slumber.
Even if you do not believe in energy "hot-spots",
(like Wi-Fi places), if you were there this week-end, you are now a
believer, this old movie house 'rocked' in a haiku style, all week-end long, the energy was abundant, contagious, and came from the Liberty's great past.
We are tearing down tomorrow, and possibly finishing on
Tuesday, but, check back here "after the Tent comes down !" We need recap, critique, and
comments by the attendees... (by Friday (10 June), we should be back alive and
active) ....
PeterB and anýa
We are asking all who attended to direct to us any photos you may have
taken, and any comments you would let us post, if you have a summation haiku/senryu for
the event, please include it ! (we will be creating a in-review packet for the
City of Bend to be formally presented to the principals who supported us ... some time in mid-July).
DO "NOT" ASSUME WE HAVE SEEN IT
!
There are all kinds of publications
and private people who have photos, and access to comments on this event ... we
"want" those ! (and yours too !)
----------------------
So, If you have photos, comments or a after-event haiku/senryu we
can use ... please forward them to us ! And ... if you sent us something, and it is not posted, PLEASE tell us !

Here is the TV coverage-after the event
On Friday 3 June, the 'first day' of the event, David Jasper of the Bend Bulletin ran a Front-page article in GO! Magazine: it is not available online, but, we scanned and posted it on here as best we can. I cut and pasted the text in, and hope it is readable, you must right click twice on the text to enlarge ... twice ! to read the three column article, (I apologize for their hyphenations, ahem) . Our three spotters (with hand held counters) had
some disparity in Fridays visitation numbers ... but, rounded off... 2,600/2,800/3,100
attended Artwalk, average length of stay 23 minutes (some spent hours-some ran
away), there were 8 artists, who sold somewhere (reported) around $2,500.00 in total works .. 'every' artist had multiple sales ! some individual sales items were
$350.00 +, the book table.... usually at these events. book
tables are 1/2 or less, than the size of what 'we' had, the books come in from
around the world as ego-items, or "new" book announcements, in 48 years of
meetings the record for sales seems to be around 5 (five)... books never sell !
We sold 66, and had 130 or so on the tables! We designed a 500 haiku wall, but,
ended up with 938 on display from over 32 countries... and 37 of the 50 States (not bad for a four month late start-first year event).
Saturdays meeting had a revolving number of
attendees (around 60), the luncheon was at 37, the dinner at 5Fusion had about
the same, the Hotel reservations were at 15 (5 below our minimum guesstimate). Sundays
work shop ran 2 full hours overtime, and had 37 people (the average from the
past 48 years is 20-25).
The doors were open all week end, and around 4,000
people (total) milled in and out (this includes members), for the Friday evening,
Saturday, and Sunday get together.
At Sundays close, 59 books had sold, and every artist had multiple sales, reportedly 5 members were added to the HSA, and 22 joined the Haiku Oregon group over this weekend !! There will be a lot more added to these raw
numbers, and a call has gone out for photos, commens, and event haiku/senryu.
Gargantuan first year event, in a first-year
town, with a new and strange venue, designed and executed in a very brief 4 months ! The terms "high energy", and the "sense of community" was heard so many
times it became mantra.
Great show Bend !
A 120% Bend community effort... that worked. !.. (except for the
media)

Tied into the First Friday Artwalk of 3 June, we created the largest display of haiku ever assembled at any Haiku Society of America meeting! (over 900 individual haiku from around the world), our “HSA Haiku Wall” display (which was built and assembled by local carpenter Ron Micnhimer) emulated the true spirit of the HSA international movement, our big screen TV from the Rent-A-Center of Bend showed 250 slides of sent-in haiku and haiga all evening long. In addition to the Haiku Wall, and slides, there were art exhibits of haiga (haiku painting), sumi-e (ink paintings), photo-haiku, haiga scrolls, haiku books for sale, haiku with oshibana (Japanese art of pressed flowers), zenga (zen inspired painting), haiku with suiseki (Japanese stone appreciation), woodblocks, haiku etchings, by 8 artists, plus a book table of haiku books sent in from all around the USA by HSA authors (60 books were sold, and every artist sold multiple pieces). We had "give-away" prizes every 1/2 hour or so (supplied by Wabi-Sabi, and our artists displaying), the host cash bar and Sake sample-tasting (with Oregon sake-One), and locally brewed Deschutes Brewery beer was sponsored by Columbia Distributing, and the 5 Fusion restaurant bar keeps, a haiku contest for a free bottle of Sake One was judged by an'ya and the winner was from Portland (who requests anonymity). Over 2,800 people toured through the Liberty up until 11:PM. At the 9AM Saturday meeting (which was open to the public), Mayor Pro-Tem Jodie Barram formally presented the Mayors' Proclamation to HSA President Ce Rosenow to open the 60 person meeting, and welcome the HSA to Bend... she re read her sponsoring haiku : whereas haiku blooms t he city of bend proclaims honor to the form
We lunched next door at Justin Cook's unique boken Izakaya, and impressed everyone with his food. HSA President Ce Rosenow and Laura Winter read haiku by the late Cid Corman, and gave a tribute presentation, Margaret Chula gave a special floral workshop entitled “Haiku Inspired by Ikebana.” The displays and Artists Booths continued to be available to the public for viewing, sales and interface all weekend. After Saturdays meeting ended, an inspirational haiku walk (ginko) along Mirror Pond in Drake Park lent mind-set for the upcoming Sunday morning workshop.. we spent lavish Dinner-time at the 5 Fusion for dinner, drinks, and some great comaraderie/fun at the hands of Lilian Chu ... then back to the Liberty for a sprint-to-midnight haiku read-fest. Sunday morning, there was a 5 hour haiku workshop (free and open to the public) guided by Michael Dylan Welch, First Vice President of the HSA, 37 people attended, and KTVZ (Z21) arrived late in the day for some latent coverage ![]() Again we thank Alexis for her donation of Artwork in designing our products, I understand these are almost sold out !

IF YOU WERE NOT THERE ... Here is some "OLD" stuff to review .... Here are some pictures of the Liberty Theater, from the pre-meeting website, be sure to visit the photo albums sent in up above....
One interior side wall is local stone (and is actually the side-wall of the building next door), the all-wood floor has been restored, this is the "full" story about the building going onto the National Historic Register, viewed by clicking here:
today, there is not much left if the old theatre configuration, it is primarily now a Hall, long and narrow.
It's mighty Wurlitzer organ was designed, originally by Robert Hope-Jones,
as a "one man orchestra" to accompany silent movies, the organ (opus #1264) was installed in 1926, it was a Style 109 (with a
piano-style console) and three ranks: Flute, Salicional, Vox.
Today, the organ resides at St. Davids Episcopal Church in Shelton, Washington.
the other interior side wall is brick,(also the building next door), as you can see, there is ample lighting, and the original ceiling fixtures are still being used ... the frontal doors and street-view "is" very "Downtown".
After our 60 day BTE (Before The Event) HSA/Artists News/Press Conference (on Friday, 1 April), we held a 45 Day Press Conference ...
18 April ... Benchmark day ! 45 Day countdown ....
We had a 1PM News Conference at the Liberty Theatre, and posted our window announcements, schedule, and event poster announcements, which is now 45 days before the 3 June First Friday Artwalk !
We thank everyone who has been a part of making this happen ... especially the gracious Bend community that has supported, encouraged, and worked with us for the past three months. Wow !
Those who did show up today deserve a nod for their long travel, and support !.
On 5 May, we will hold our next (30 day) Press Conference at the Liberty.
On behalf of the Haiku Society of America and Haiku Oregon, Thanks !
UPDATE: 1 May, We are cancelling the sidewalk Press Conference at the Liberty for 5 May, and moving it to 19 May !!
Just found out from Justin Cook, that on Thursday, (Cinco de Mayo June 5th), the
Mexican restaurant "Cinco de Mayo" in downtown Bend, has a permit to close Wall
St between Oregon Ave and Minnesota Ave between 8:30 AM and midnight ...
The very popular Latino hip hop, funk band (Ozozmatli) will be featured, they're
expecting 4k-5k people, and it should be loud, all day, and crowded, with hard
to find parking.
Not wanting to miss the heavy walk-by pedestrian traffic at the Liberty,
(for either the Cinco de Mayo crowd, or, the May First Friday Artwalk crowd) we
will be "silently" posting the rest of the window dressing at the Liberty
WITHOUT a Press Conference, or Street Meeting as
announced earlier.
Please pass the word, there will be no 1:PM formal
Mayors Proclamation posting Ceremony at the Liberty on Thursday, 5 May !.
- we will now merge this event with the already pre-announced 19 May, 1PM Press
(15 day alarm !) Artists Conference date for a "combined" public News presentation. See you
then... Thanks for your support !

Printed on Page 13, "Go" Magazine-Bend Bulletin Newspaper, David JasperNational Haiku Society to meet in BendThe National Haiku Society of America will hold its quarterly meeting June 3-5 in Bend, which has been officially dubbed Bend Haiku Weekend by Bend Mayor Jeff Eager. At the Liberty Theatre during First Friday Gallery Walk in June, the group will install “the largest display of haiku ever assembled at any Haiku Society of America meeting,” according to a press release from Haiku Oregon, a small but mighty group of poets and artists, living in a bountiful state,” according to the press release. That’s the news from Haiku Oregon, “a sses. And that’s not all the haiku news. The goal is to exhibit 500 haiku, and to that end, Haiku Oregon is accepting submissions for the display, or “HSA Haiku Wall.” Haiku can be e-mailed, with “HSA Haiku Wall” in the subject line, to An’ya at haikubyanya@gmail.com. Include your name, city, state and country. Along with the wall, “there will be exhibits of haiga (haiku painting), sumi-e (ink paintings), haiga scrolls, haiku books for sale, haiku with oshibana (Japanese art of pressed flowers), zenga (zen inspired painting), haiku with suiseki (Japanese stone appreciation), woodblocks and haiku etchings,” according to Haiku Oregon. The event will also feature open-mic haiku readings Friday evening during the Gallery Walk and a no-host Happy Hour Dinner Tour in downtown Bend. The HSA will round out the weekend with its all-day Saturday meeting, followed by an “inspirational haiku walk” in Drake Park. (June 5, Sunday). On June 5, Michael Dylan Welch, first vice president of the HSA, will conduct a haiku workshop. All events are free and open to the public. — David Jasper On Thursday 2 June, 1 day BTE, the "Source" ran this coverage:
http://www.tsweekly.com/culture/words/japanese-haiku-is-coming-to-downtown-bend-so-sharpen-your-pens.htmlOn Sunday 5 June, on the "third day"and final of the event, the local TV station KTVZ 21 ran a 6PM evening news piece ... after we had all gone home. Sorry, there "was" no Arts and Entertainment (A & E) Articles, or schedule ever printed!
As you can see on the Google search, many "did" post us on their web schedule of events, howeve, rmany did not. 12 July, 2011 CRITIQUE The formal recap critique presentation (Power-point) is now completed, and our review of the 2011 event has concluded, over 400 of you responded back, and we have offered the normally proprietary PowerPoint presentation to the City of Bend for insight and action. A solitary glitch in our Bend 2011 event needed resolving, for us to plan and execute a 2012 Bend sequel event ... after now attempting to address that issue, (the media) with the city of Bend, we are unsuccessful, as of 17 August. | ||||||||
