The Mwogo Health Center serves a population of over 21,000 people. It is located in the Bugesera District of Rwanda, one of the areas most devastated by the 1994 genocide. Mwogo is an impoverished, very remote village. When a villager cannot receive the medical care he/she needs at the Mwogo Health Center (due to lack of equipment, supplies, medicines, etc.), the next closest medical facility is a 4-hour walk. The coordinates are -2.07556, 30.13778. Click here to see the location on Google Maps.
Some of the most common ailments affecting the local population are malaria, HIV/AIDS, parasites, infections, dysentary, dehydration and malnutrition. The clinic staff is hard-working and dedicated, but their success and efficiency is limited due to lack of diagnostic equipment, treatment equipment and pharmaceuticals. Furthermore, they do not have sufficient sterilization resources to adequately minimize the spread of disease among patients.
Based on successes realized at similar clinics around the world by our partners and others, we are certain that we can greatly improve the level of healthcare at Mwogo Health Center. Will you join us in bringing about this life-saving transformation?

BEFORE
Beds and Linens
The 13 beds are not enough for the volume of patients. As needed, sick patients are doubled-up in the narrow beds or are simply given a spot on the floor – with or without a mattress and sheet – for their stay at the clinic.
Many of the existing beds are rusted and have thin, cracked mattresses, making sterilization impossible (i.e., inviting the spread of disease from the very beds on which patients lay).
Labor and Delivery
The labor and delivery room is primitive, offering little comfort and no equipment to assist in a high-risk birth.

AFTER
We will send sturdy beds with new mattresses and linens. In addition to providing a sanitary place for sick people to recover, these will offer much needed comfort.
We have beds as well as durable exam tables with clean linens already available and awaiting shipment to Mwogo.
Waiting to be sent to Mwogo are a clean, comfortable delivery table and life-saving birthing equipment like fetalscopes, forceps and monitors |

Hope and Health for Rwanda (HAHFR) was established in early 2008. In addition to providing Medical supplies, HAHFR had these goals:
Water
Water-borne diseases account for a high percentage of illnesses that plague the local population. With no well and a broken rainwater collection system, the clinic is forced to spend what little money it has to purchase water from a delivery truck. HHR is actively working to get a permanent clean water source at the clinic.
Power
At this time, there is no dependable source of power at the clinic. The lone generator is unreliable, often rendering pharmaceuticals that require refrigeration completely impotent. This also hampers lighting/vision for nighttime emergency procedures and births. HHR is pursuing a permanent source of power for the clinic through various partners.
