Updates
September 1, 2008
Dear all,
I wanted to update you on a few things that we've been doing behind the scenes recently in the ministry. We've been getting a lot more donations now and we've been taking inventory of what we've received. I encourage all of you to check the donations page on our website (menu to your left!) to see what items are available to give to your family before you rush out and buy something. The Lord has blessed us with willing donors and we really have a lot of clothes, toys, and kid's books to give away! Secondly, as was planned from the beginning, once medical school started up again for me, I would be limited in my time and would move out of the day-to-day coordinating role; that time has come and Anna Watkins and Lindsay Grove will be taking over the day-to-day affairs of the ministry. I will remain in this ministry in the Board of Governors and help to plan vision and goals. As such, we have restructured our ministry's leadership to reflect our rapid growth and I would like to introduce a few new people to you. Please refer to the attached document for the roles of each position: Board of Governors (current): Isaac Chan, Joe Chen, Lindsay Grove, Monique Loh, CK Su, Julia Tang, Anna Watkins, Patrick Watkins, Eddie Wu Executive Coordinators: Anna Watkins, Lindsay Grove Volunteer Outreach Coordinators: Sandy Pham, Eric San Volunteer In-reach Coordinator: Alex Chao Spiritual Accountability Coordinator: Eddie Wu Webmaster: Patrick Watkins An important note - if you have any concerns about the ministry, please contact Alex Chao first (oldskool33@gmail.com); he will be the first line of care for all our volunteers and any needs you guys may have. He is very excited to get to know each and every one of you! Finally, it's been great starting this ministry and seeing it become established. It really just began one night in May and I am truly amazed at what's been done since then. The outpour of love and care you’ve shown these refugees has been incredible and put our church another step forward toward being a pillar of support in the community. I really get a great deal of energy speaking to you guys about the work you're doing in this ministry and about your own spiritual growth so feel free to talk to me anytime! I truly feel that God has been with us every step of the way and I praise Him for such rapid mobilization of minds, bodies, and hearts! With God leading the way, we all have accomplished a great deal over the summer and I am positive that we're going to accomplish so much more! Praise to Him and continue praying for our ministry and our church. With His love, Isaac USCRI Contact has changed
August 24, 2008 Carrie, our contact at USCRI, will be away on maternity leave beginning around August 28th for a twelve week period. During this time, any questions about your refugee families can be directed to Morgan Price. Contact her at mprice@uscri-raleigh.org or 919-334-0072, Ext. 7 if you need assistance. HELPFUL FAMILY MENTOR GATHERING POSTPONED August 17, 2008 The USCRI office invited us to attend their quarterly volunteer gathering on Thursday evening, but the event has been postponed. Thank you for your interest in the event, and sorry for your inconvenience. We will email information about the new meeting as soon as we receive it. RESOURCE ALERT August 3, 2008 FREE BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND COOKOUT On Tuesday, August 19th at NOON, the Durham Rescue mission will be giving out free backpacks full of school supplies and free lunch. The address is 1201 East Main Street, Durham, North Carolina. See the events section of the Durham Rescue Missions' website for more info. http://www.durhamrescuemission.org/ PRAISE THE LORD! August 3, 2008 Rob and I were talking about our refugee family this week and thinking that it would be nice to take them somewhere but we didn't feel that it would be safe without car seats for all three of their kids (we have one that the younger one can use but don't have booster seats). Amazingly that very same day, Rob was walking Nick to the pool and a neighbor just happened to be giving two booster seats away for free! It's amazing that we were just talking about it earlier that day and God provided exactly what we needed. It was the only thing that the neighbor was giving away in their front yard so God's intentions were crystal clear! --- Nancy Lenfestey "...how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!" Matthew 7:11b Please send testimonies of how God is working among the teams and families to habitofserving@gmail.com . Welcome Home Project CONCLUSION July 25, 2008 Thank you to everyone who participated in the Welcome Home Project! Dozens of people volunteered their time, money, cars, and possessions to make this project a great success. The apartment turned out beautifully, fully stocked with more than it needed. The case worker said she was impressed by and grateful for the generosity of our church. ![]() The family moved in last night after arriving to the airport at midnight. One of our own teams is fortunate to be paired with the Welcome Home family for family mentoring, so we were able to meet them and will continue to see them weekly at the apartment. The family consists of a single mother with two children, ages 10 and 17. Despite normal needs and concerns, the mother expressed gratitude for the fortune she has encountered in moving to America. She is hopeful of a better life here for her children and herself. Please pray that God will use us in this family's life to share His love with them in action and in truth. Updates July 25, 2008 Family mentoring teams have begun meeting with new refugee families!!! While the families have many needs, the most important gift the teams have given is friendship. Don't get bogged down by the needs, God will provide in time. If your team hasn't been assigned a family, be assured that this is the time of year when families begin coming in quickly. They will be assigned as soon as they arrive! TIME SHEETS Time sheets are due at the end of each month, though feel free to fill on out after each visit. Time Sheets are located under Important Files. Contact Patrick at watkinspatrick@gmail.com with any problems with time sheets. May HE be glorified by all we do, Anna NEW Volunteers, please fill out the New Day Ministry Volunteer Form: click here Click here to find out why we started this ministry. Please use the sidebar to your left to navigate our site. From it, you can see our vision for why we're doing this and the mission statement for more information on what we plan to do. Also, check out important announcements and updates in our calendar! Updates June 17, 2008 Hi everybody, The ministry leadership met last Sunday and one of the things that was brought was the idea of transparency. So as the leadership meets, we'll be periodically updating this space on we've been doing, allowing everyone to know what we've decided and the exciting progress we've been making. Many things were talked about last Sunday. We've finally come up with a tentative schedule for the training date so that it won't run too long or become unfocused. We've made some progress in deciding how to institute spiritual accountability into this program. We'll unveil it on June 28th, but if our goal is to strengthen the faith of everyone involved from volunteers to refugees, I think you guys will be pleased. Also, we're working on a flow chart to better explain how the ministry is organized so that should be made available soon. We're all pretty pumped about the potential that God has in store for us - these are exciting times for our church! Please continue praying for this ministry - take a look at the prayer requests to your left. Thanks! In Him, Isaac June 7, 2008 Over the past year I have been contemplating what exactly it means to be a Christian. With society ever producing temptations to stray from our faith, how can a young man keep his way pure? How do we live out what we believe? I have observed many of my peers, young professionals, who have grown disillusioned with or removed from the process of walking with Christ, not knowing or understanding the point of countless Bible studies, Sunday schools, and morning sermons; these young men and women work as they live relatively carefree lives, but for what purpose? Their desultory walks are caused by a lack of guidance and goals.
But it was not until a student in my Sunday school class raised this issue of purposeful living that I fully realized the extent of the problem. Among believers in our church, there should not be these struggles of faith. Within any church, there should be ample opportunity to serve and act on belief, to show others Christ’s love in a productive and effective way. The Church, our church should be active flag-bearers and messengers of Hope, a firm hope to which we ourselves so desperately cling, reaching those who are not only deficient physically, but also spiritually. While we often talk about the meaning of Matthew 28:16-19, many of us fall short. Especially for those who doubt, Jesus gives us a clear edict: Go and make disciples of all nations. Through Christ’s grace and mercy, we should be able to push forward and continue onwards, laboring with all His energy which so powerfully works within us. As a result, we desire to create a long-term, sustainable, cross-generational ministry, full of Christly passion, with the hope of addressing these needs within and outside of Raleigh Chinese Christian Church. |
