Why are the GYSA registration dates so early?
We are often asked why we require players to register with GYSA 3 months before the start of the season. This is a fair question and we answer it for you here.

Each soccer season, we form 22 to 26 teams (U10 thru U14) which compete in the ECYSA Fall league. GYSA is bound to the registration schedule of ECYSA and must submit finalized team rosters approximately 8 weeks before the start of the soccer season. This provides ECYSA time to complete the process of registering players from all towns (approximately 7,500 players across 17 towns), placing teams in the appropriate division based on team strength, and then coordinating game schedules and referee assignments. The process to prepare our registration information for submission to ECYSA generally takes us 4 weeks to complete. Combining our 4 week processing time with 8 weeks for ECYSA requires that we have a 3 month lead time before the start of the upcoming season.

Age Group Placement (Age Eligibility)
The  United States Youth Soccer (USYSA) establishes the birth dates that are used for its competitive programs and to ensure consistency of age groups for teams that travel. MYSA and ECYSA adopts the USYSA age groups for its soccer year.  GYSA adopts the ECYSA age groups for its soccer year
  • All GYSA travel players will conform to the proper age group as provided by ECYSA Eligibility Chart. The only exception is players born in August (see GYSA By-Laws in the Document Library).
  • Children playing within the GYSA shall play to as great extent as possible within age appropriate guidelines provided that it will be presumed that underage children will play with their grade if the majority of their classmates are playing at a higher level.  Once a player decides  to play with their grade (coming out of U10 going into U12), they are not permitted to play down an age group again.
  • No player shall play for the opposite gender.
  • No player shall play up an age group, except by-laws rules 2.2.3 and Operational Rule, Section 14.
  • No registered player (travel or intown) will participate in more than one age group as listed above.
  • Active enrollment in Kindergarten is required for participation in the GYSA Kindergarten Clinic Program.
