Developmental Timeline of Grater Woods Guidelines for Use of Trails and Forest Edgar the Moose Created by: Zabrina Marino Fall 2008
|
The Grater Woods Trail System was the culmination of a two-year partnership between the Merrimack School District and the Town of Merrimack between 2006-2008. The majority of the construction funds were provided by the NH Department of Economic and Resource Development (DES) and their Bureau of Trails under a state-wide competitive grant program. Grant monies for the development of this trail system were awarded to the Merrimack Middle School (MMS) through the efforts of Ann LaCroix and Christine Nawrocki, seventh grade science teachers and Andy Powell, MCC Chairman. The Merrimack Conservation Commission, Merrimack Middle School Parent Teacher Group and MMS Student Council provided matching funds.
The project involved upgrading portions of an old logging road system plus building new trails. Construction of the trails was in accordance with Best Management Practices for Trail Construction and Maintenance. Project specifications were written by Dan Cyr from Bay State Forestry of Francestown, NH.
