Memorial Day Events

posted Apr 26, 2011 2:07 PM by Jim Huisel   [ updated Apr 26, 2011 2:14 PM ]

Memorial Day is May 30th this year and again our Legion Post is planning honors to our fallen veterans.

At 11:00 AM Post 771 conducts their usual service at Warren Township Cemetery. This short service is held at the Flagpole in the center of the Cemetery.

At Noon our Legion Post presents for the Village of Gurnee our annual Memorial Day Ceremonies. The speaker this year is Mr. Robert Maroney of River Forest, Illinois. Mr. Maroney served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. The Merchant Marines have received very little credit or recognition thru the years, but their status and importance during the war effort is finally coming to light. The Viking Middle School Band will perform again and the public is invited back to our Memorial Home for a luncheon and refreshments. The usual turnout is a few hundred visitors. The ceremony is held at Veterans Memorial Park on the northwest corner of O'Plaine and Washington Streets. Overflow parking is available at both the Gurnee Library and the Post Office.

Please come out and represent your Post and enjoy our activities. Any questions, please contact the chairman, Skip Fentress at 847-263-6041.

Adopt-A-Platoon

posted Mar 23, 2009 8:19 PM by Jim Huisel   [ updated Nov 9, 2010 8:01 PM ]

Auxiliary Vice President Rhonda Elia has decided to join the Adopt-A-Platoon program. She is collecting items for “care” packages to be sent each month to her “adopted” platoon which is in the Persian Gulf. Various types of food items (no chocolate) and personal items are needed for her platoon which has 20 members, including two females. Stamps are not needed, but pens and stationery are welcome items. Most requested items include beef jerky, baby wipes/body wipes, paperback books, and magazines (age doesn't matter). Nothing in glass containers, nothing that will melt, and no pressurized items can be sent, as well as no pork products, no liquor, no material that may be considered pornographic, and no religious items offensive to the Islamic faith. Please see Rhonda Elia for the complete list of suggested items. If you'd like to donate items, please bring them to the Gurnee American Legion by the next meeting, March 18. Monetary donations (to be used towards postage and to buy items needed to complete packages) may be made out the Gurnee American Legion Auxiliary Unit 771 with Adopt-A-Troop in the message area. For more information, please call Rhonda at(224) 577-8441.
