IBM accelerates silicon to more that 500 GHz

IBM today claimed the crown for the world's fastest chip, at least in terms of clock speed: The company said it was able to achieve frequencies "above 500 GHz" by "cryogenically freezing" the chip. And the company apparently does not want to stop there: Using silicon-germanium (SiGe) technologies, IBM is aiming for near-THz speeds.

Intel's Meromand Conroe get a new name: Core 2 Duo

Intel Corp is planning to launch a singular brand name, "Core 2 Duo" for its new generation of chips for laptops and desktop PCs. The company is banking on these chips to regain market share lost to rival Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).

Dell's New Gaming Laptops

Early this morning, Dell announced the availability of a new addition to the XPS gaming line. The XPS M1710 laptop is a major upgrade of Dell's XPS laptop lineup, and boasts impressive upgrades over previous models.

Based upon Intel Core Duo CPUs, the M1710 will offer NVIDIA's GeForce Go 7900 GTX GPU with 512 MB ram. The M1710 will have space for up to 4 GB of system ram.

Apple Computer, the maker of the iPod, yesterday announced a new program which allows its computers to run Microsoft's Windows operating system. The new software, called Boot Camp, lets customers run the Windows system alongside existing Apple programs.

Microsoft buys Games Studio Lionhead

Microsoft announced Thursday it had acquired British game developer Lionhead Studios, creator of the popular "Fable" role-playing game. The news came alongside a promise that Microsoft would remain committed to the Japanese market, where RPGs are far more popular than the first person shooters preferred in the United States.

Lionhead will develop games exclusively for the Xbox 360 and Microsoft's Windows desktop operating system. The studio's founder Peter Molyneux said the deal will give Lionhead "the stability and opportunity to focus on creating world-class next-generation titles.
