The Story:

Gunny was riding, tied, in the back of his 'owners' truck when he was startled and 'jumped' out. He was drug behind the truck for an unknown amount of time before he was noticed.  His injuries were sever - most of his toe nails were missing, one toe was almost totally scrapped off with the bone exposed, the tops of all four feet were scraped of flesh and muscle and his left flank was defleshed completely.

In a panic and without finances to owner gave the dog to a 'friend' who eventually took Gunny in for proper vet care, telling the vet staff she had found the dog, left to die, on the side of the road.

Believing a crime was committed local media was alerted to the event  and a massive area wide report went out that a major crime had been committed against an innocent dog.

A cry of "Justice for Gunny" was heard.

Local law enforcement  investigating were not convinced a crime and been committed and no charges were ever filed.

When he was surrendered to the vets office, everyone originally thought Gunny was a stray - abused, neglected and left to die - mass amounts of phone calls and emails were made to try and  secure the necessary funds to pay for  Gunnys care - and because his medial expenses were great, great efforts were taken to secure these funds.

Success for Gunny.

While criminal charges may never be pressed agianst the indiviuals responsible for Gunnys injuries - Gunny will not be the one to suffer.  He has been well cared for by the kind staff at Dr. Allreds Veterinary Clinic.  Donations have provided hydrotherapy twice a day, pain medication, antibiotics and if deemed necessary by the medical staff, the removal of Gunnys toe should the bone become infected.

Each day Gunny gets stronger and feels better.  While he still limps slightly on both back feet he enjoys basking in the sun light and loving affection.

On May 12, 2008 Gunny had the following pictures taken.  He was mobile on all four legs, still favoring this right foot a little, but seemed in excellent spirits and so very loving!  He was giving kisses to the office staff and his little nub of a tail we just wiggling!

You can see how well the wound is healing and all the love and affection he has received has really kept him happy.   As of right now, Gunny still has all his toes, Doc still believes the toe can heal and with proper care will be fine.  It really is a day at a time.

He is still receiving hydrotherapy twice a day and has started treatment for his heartworms.

We will post updates as they become available!

Donations are still being accepted for Gunny's care.  This webpage will be used to post his updates and when Gunny is healed, whole and  in his new home, we will use this sight to highlight the plight of other abused, neglected or mistreated animals in our community.

Public awareness of animal cruelty and neglect is a tool we use to help stop it.  We are saving lives, one dog at a time!

NEWS FLASH!!

5-19-08

On Friday May 16, 2008 Gunny had a skin graph!  A human burn surgeon from a local hospital donated time, supplies and expertise to help Gunny!  The surgeon removed skin from Gunny’s left side, along his ribs and graphed it over his defleshed flank and toes!  The procedure went so well, Dr. Allred assures us that he probably will NOT have to loose his toe! Not only that, but since the procedure Gunny is reportedly walking and RUNNING without limping on either hind leg!!  The pictures look harsh, but he was in good spirits and was wagging his nubby tail as these pictures were taken!!  What a great dog and what a great story!!!

Success for Gunny

The doctor that performed the skin graft has declaired it 95% successful!! A small portion of the skin did not 'take' on his flank, but the toe is completely covered and the majority of his flank has a new pink covering of skin!!  Baring any further complications, Gunny should be ready for his new home in the next week or two!!

This is the foot where the bone was exposed!  It has been completely covered and you can see the skin graft is kind of  checkerboard looking.

This is the flank - the top portion is covered with new skin, again you can see the checkerboard pattern and the middle, where it is less pink and more white is where the Dr. is concerned the new skin did not 'take'.  We have been advised that this surgery was very successful with about 80 - 85% of the graft taking as it should.

You can send donations for the Gunny Fund
