The Portable Imaging Platform is an experimental platform built to ease the development of embedded vision systems through a simple deployment procedure, relatively high speed and quality image capture and storage, and available on-board computational power. Embedded video surveillance and monitoring applications generate a significant amount of data that is uninformative for biological monitoring. Because of storage and bandwidth limitations, it has a significant impact on the amount of data that can be collected for biological study. We use the Portable Imaging Platform (PIP) to investigate a novel method of video encoding that takes reduces the large amounts of uninformative data for biological sensing. We propose a background subtraction encoding method utilizes a smart background subtraction algorithm to encode only foreground objects. The results indicate that the proposed method can improve quality by about 50% when compared with MPEG4 H.264/AVC at the same target bit rate. You can find information about how to set up PIP at Setting up PIP.
