Travel in and around Edinburgh is convenient and offers lots of choice
Airport
Edinburgh airport is one of the biggest Scottish airports and is located just 8 miles west of the city center and is easily accessable by taxi, car and bus. . To reach Edinburgh by bus, car or taxi the journey will take about 30 - 35 minutes. There is a shuttle bus from the airport right into the center of town which runs 24/7 every ten to twenty minutes with tickets costing £3.50 single for an adult and £6 return for an adult. Taxis from the city center to the airport will cost about £20.
The airports departure lounge is currently being improved and there are a number of shops and resturants to choose from once you are through departures. You can fly to Edinburgh from a number of world wide destinations with most major airlines for example KLM, Brittish Airways, Easyjet, Jet2 and Delta Air Lines.
Local buses
The local bus company is Lothian buses and they opperate services both day and night around the city and surrounding areas. The bus service is regular and ticekts cost £1.20 for an adult single and 70p for a child's (5-15) single. They also operate day tickets for £3 adult, £2.70 child which allows you to hop on and off any lothian buses and allow you to explore the city at your leisure.
Trams
Edinburgh is currently undergoing some major changes in the city center and trams are being restored to Edinburgh's streets as trams were seen throughout the city until 1956. The trams are to run from one side of Edinburgh to the other, starting at Leith and running out to the airport. At present the trams are due to be finished between 2010 and 2011. This will provide another easy, quick and accessable way of getting around Edinburgh.
Train Stations
Edinburgh has two main train stations both within easy reach of the city center. Haymarket is located just to the West of the city and is the smaller of the two train stations. Waverly is the bigger station located on Princes street. From these stations you can travel to places all around Scotland and England with connecting journeys to Wales and Ireland also available. The train station has a large number of passanger facilities including a Marks and Spencers, Millies Cookies, toilets, ticket office, bureau de change.
Bus Station
Edinburgh's bus station is also very central and from here you can get cheap tickets to all over Scotland and also connecting journeys to England, from Saint Andrews to Aberdeen, giving you a chance to see more of Scotland.
How else can I get around the city?
You can get around the city by taxis, although this will very quickly become expensive. You do have other options such as walking, which will give you a chance to take in the city at your own pace and explore those smaller side streets full of individual styled shops and interesting architecture.
