Edinburgh Authors

Edinburgh has several well known authors including J K Rowling and Ian Rankin.

Ian Rankin is the UK's number one best selling crime author and he has written a number of crime novels featuring Inspector Rebus and Edinburgh. His first Rebus novel was published in 1987 and since then he was written many more all featuring Edinburgh, but not as you know it. The Edinburgh depicted in the books is far short of the Edinburgh which thousands of tourists flock to each year, it is the dark heart of Edinburgh hidden behind the historic buildings.

One such book is Exit Music which is set in late Autumn, Edinburgh. Rebus is trying to tie up his last remaining loose ends when he finds himself on the case of a murder trial. A Russian poet has been found dead by an apparent mugging, however at the same time high level Russian business men are in edinburgh looking to bring more business to Edinburgh. However, the more Rebus discovers about this case, the more he is convinced it is not a simple mugging especially after another killing.

Another author is of course J K Rowling. She wrote many chapters and draughts for Harry Potter whilst sitting in cafes around Edinburgh, while her daughter slept in the pushchair beside her. The most well known  of the cafes is Elephant Cafe, just of the Royal Mile. Finally the book was finished and sent of to an agent who sent it straight back. After several more attempts the book was finally accepted by a publisher in 1996.
