Edinburgh university was first established in 1582, making it the 6th university to be established in Britain, making it one of the ancient uiversity of the United Kingdom. The university is an internationally renowned university for teaching and research and is ranked in the top 25 of the worlds top universitys.
The university has around 16,980 undergraduate students and 7,240 post graduate students. The university also comprises of three colleges, the Colleges of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), Science and Engineering (CSE), and Medicine and Veterinary Medicine (MVM) and within these colleges there are 21 different schools.

The university is located in the middle of Edinburgh with the main campus being George Square and the area around it, housing the main university library, the school of Informatics and Law as well as the EUSA buildings. The Veterinary school is located to the east side of the Meadows but also uses farm facilities to the south of the city. The school of Education is a little further away, but still central. It is located just off the Royal Mile and is undergoing some some development. Kings Buildings which house the Science and Engineering schools is further away but is still within walking distance from the main campus. There is also a free shuttle bus provided daily between Kings and George Square.
Accommdation
Pollock halls is Edinburgh's main university halls of recidence and is located next to Holyrood Park. Pollock halls provides accommodation for first year students. There are currently ten different halls, as two loder buildings were demolished in 2002 and a new one put up in it's place. At present there is also a new building being built as well as an extention to the dining room. the accommodation provided it mostly single roms with a shared toilet, although some rooms are en suite. Each house has their own reputation and it soon bcmes clear what that is as the semester progresses. On site there is a small shop and bar which are both run by students as well as a reception area. The site also hosts a conference center, computer labs, squash courts and laundry facilities.
The university also has a number of university owned flats located around the city, moslty situated in Marchmont, Newington and New Town. The unversity holds viewing sessions of these flats every year and students are given a chance to view the flats and then sign up for them, although the big queues and lines of people can often mean that you do not get your first choice and may sometimes lose out altogether so it is a good idea to turn up early to these sessions. Many students also live in privately owned flats throughout the city.
Student association
The university has a student union which looks after the universities 222 student societies as well as Potterrow, King's Buildings house and various shops and cafes around the campuses. Teviot Row House is said to be the oldest purpose built student building in the world.
There are also two student run newspapers published regularly. The Student is produced by students at the unniversity of Edinburgh and was established in 1887 and is the oldest student newspaper in the UK. The Journal is the other newspaper and it is run by students not lony from Edinburgh university but also from Heriot - Watt university, Napier University, Queen Margaret University and the Edinburgh College of Art.It was established in 2007 by three students at Edinburgh university.
Societies
Edinburgh university was over 200 different societies to choose from and the cahnce for you to start your own if you believe there is something lacking from the list. There are all sorts of different societies to join all for a small membership fee, the societies do not just meet but will also arrange dances, drinking nights, fund raisers etc throughtout the year and offers you a great way of meeting new people.
Some of the societies on offer are Scottish Dancing, Rugby (both male and female), charity work, choclate socitiy, music societies, chess etc.
