Second Life - Reload

Books to Get You Started (as recommended by Laelia Laval)

Second Life for Dummies - Sarah Robbins & Mark Bell
SL_for_Dummies_book.jpg
Though I am by far no fan of the 'for Dummies' book, I will make an exception for this one. Clear step-by-step instructions, colorful visuals, and a sense of humor make this book a valuable addition to my bookshelf.

Second Life: A Guide to Your Virtual World - Brian White
SL_A_Guide_to_Your_Virtual_World_for_wiki.jpg

White's close to 400 page color book is worth it's weight in gold. It's the next book I would strongly recommend after 'A Beginner's Guide to Second Life'.

Second Life: The Official Guide - Michael Rymaszewski, et. al.
Second_Life_the_Official_Guide_image_for_wiki.jpg
This was the book everyone was recommending when I first entered Second Life. Not only where many of the links outdated (which I know is partially the nature of the beast of SL), but I found the information too vague and a lot of it was beyond what I wanted or needed for my initial foray into SL.

How to Do Everything in Second Life - Richard Mansfield
How_to_Do_Everything_in_SL_for_wiki.jpg
This book has the look and feel of the 'Dummies' series (which I DO NOT like), but luckily Mansfield has a way with words that is neither insulting nor demeaning, and actually had me chuckling a few times. This book covers the basics and goes into far deeper detail than other beginners' books on SL. Some of the information was a little too advanced for me, but I did pick up quite a number of tips & tricks on things I though I already knew a lot about.

Second Life and the Google Teacher Academy

SLossary - Second Life Glossary

AFK - 'away from keyboard'

ALT - a resident's other avatars; one person may have more than one avatar in SL

ANIMATION OVERRIDE - a scripting program that allows your avatar to have more lifelike walks, poses, etc.; also known as 'AO'

AVATAR - your virtual representation in SL; could be male/female, furry, creature

BLING - jewelry/attachment which emits a shimmering particle effect, contributes to lag, so please use sparingly

BORKED - 'broken'; normally refers to a script that is not working properly

BRB - 'be right back'

CAMPING - earning $L by sitting on a chair or doing a menial task; used by merchants/sim owners to increase their popularity based on visits

FREEBIE - item offered at no cost

FURRY - anthropomorphic animal avatar, most common are cats or other cute furry animals

HOVER TEXT - text that appears floating above an object

HUD - 'heads-up display'; provides useful information in a location on your screen (think of it as an additional window on your screen); an attachment that is viewed only by the avatar who owns it; most common are animation overrides and MystiTools.

IM - instant message; really the only way to have a private conversation in SL

INWORLD - being in Second Life; as opposed to 'RL' (Real Life)

KK - 'Okay Cool' (I first encountered this term when used by KJ Hax)

$L - Linden dollars; the currency of SL

LAG - the amount of time between using your keyboard/mouse and your avatar actually doing it; caused by slow internet connections, too many avatars/objects/scripts running all at once in the same place

LANDMARK ('LM') - a specific location in SL, provides the name of the sim and the coordinates

LOL - 'laughing out loud'

MACHINIMA (pronounced muh-sheen-eh-mah) - movies made in SL

MOUSELOOK - a view your avatar can have; you see the world (SL that is) from the eyes of your avatar); takes a close up view of objects

NEWBIES/NOOBS - new residents of SL

POSEBALLS - colored balls that when clicked embeds and activates animations into your avatar (normally 'sitting', etc.)

PRIM ('PRIMITIVE') - the building blocks of all things in SL; a single cube or other shape: linked together, they can create complex objects. Each object has a 'prim count' which is the total number of shapes the object is comprised of

RESIDENT - someone who has membership (an avatar) in Second Life

REZ/REZZING/REZZED - since SL is internet based sometimes connections are slow and objects and avatars (particularly their clothing) may take a little while to appear

RUTH/RUTHED - a funny, primeval appearance that an avatar will sometimes take on, especially after teleporting. Going into 'Appearance' mode and then going back out will often cure the distortion of the avatar. However, there are times that only a re-log will cure this peculiar affliction!

SANDBOXES - areas in SL where residents can practice building (NOTE: ALWAYS read the rules of the sandbox before building)

SIM ('SIMULATION') - regions that make up SL

SLURL - a direct teleport link to a location in Second Life

TEXTURE - an image that covers prims to give them a look of authenticity

TELEPORT - a form of transportation in Second Life

TP me - 'please teleport me to your location'

TTYL/TTYS - 'talk to you later/soon'

TY - 'thank you'
