Picasa (and Picasa Web)

The Tool: http://picasa.google.com

As you explore the tool, answer these questions:
  1. What is it? How does it work? What's special about it?
  2. How might it be useful for educators and students?
  3. What else do you want to learn about it?
Finally, you will have approximately 2 minutes to share what you find with your team. (Each individual should share in the 15 minutes allotted.)

Photo Management system - resides on individual machines
Different from Flickr b/c you can privatize
IT people have to install it on local machines - but you can create a web album
What it does well:
1.  when you install, it looks for all photo-based file extensions on your machine....automatically installs into your system
2.  image enhancement tools (better tools than iPhoto)

Combines Flickr's sharing abilities with iPhoto's editing photos and organizes and lets you publish mobile albums

Downside: integration with iWork and iLife... is not there
You could run both

Picassa tags and organizes more cleanly than iPhoto
can add Text and captions to photos
creative commons
email uploads
photo collage capability
can embed in maps... COOL!
can tag photos and add geolocation
face-recognition on the web album edition
