On GTR a full-sounding G major chord can be played by strumming all
strings, while depressing the pinky finger on the 1st string 3rd fret
(G), the ring finger on the 6th string 3rd fret (G), the middle finger
on the 5th string 2nd fret (B), and the other strings allowed to ring
open (D, G and B strings). In this position, the index finger is free to
strike down on the 2nd string 1st fret, raising the open B tone to C,
and thereby suspending the G chord! On Piano find the G key with your left pinky, the B key with your middle finger, and the D key with your thumb, and depress all together to make a G major chord. Lift your middle finger but use your index finger instead over the C key, and depress all, to make a Gsus chord! In Music composers choose harmonious and consonant major chords to convey brightness and joy. But to convey dissonance or anticipation, they may choose a major chord voiced in its "suspended" state: the third tone is replaced by the scale's perfect fourth. Literally, the third tone is suspended - raised above - its comfortable, stable place. In Literary Works it is inconsiderate to create a mystery without eventually revealing
the truth. This "promise" applies also to suspended chords. It is not
polite to create dissonance in the listener's ear without eventually
"resolving" the suspense, quelling the anticipation. The Gsus chord is
easily resolved with G major. Indeed, as in the creation of fiction, a
boundless palette of suspensions and resolutions is available to
creators of music. In Worship Life we learn of immensely suspenseful, anticipatory stories: Creation; Eden; Flood;
Birth; Crucifixion; Revelation, and many more. In prayer, we try to
suspend our worries, looking forward to God's gracious love. In Mission work, we try to suspend anticipation and self-doubt, in favor of
flexibility and patience. In sanctuary, we try to anticipate the final
outcome of a suspenseful sermon. In the Major Suspensions of our daily lives, let us look to Jesus Christ as the source and the resolution of all positive, holy anticipations; as the healer of all that are not. In GTR Ensemble we look forward to helping you experience God's gift - the Chord of Life - the only chord we'll ever need: Jesus! We strive to convey His
love and grace through instrument and voice. We anticipate that our song selection and playing style will enhance and uplift your worship experience. And when we purposefully create
dissonance, suspense and anticipation, we promise to bring you back
forthwith to a comfortable, stable place. |
