The coalition of “Georgia Students for Public Higher Education” (GSPHE) includes all students in the state of Georgia who believe that education is a right and should be affordable for all of us. It includes student support for the workers within the colleges and universities, from the person who cleans to the person who grades. It acknowledges the dual role many students assume as both students and workers, inside and outside the college and/or university. GSPHE formed in late 2009 to protest the Supplemental Instructional Fee and its subsequent doubling by the Board of Regents. On March 15, 2010, over 500 students from across the state came together to oppose the cuts. Since then, we have grown into a movement prepared to fight against assaults on public higher education, and ensure education stays affordable, public, and accessible for all. The stakes have also grown higher as tuition has gone up across the University System of Georgia--at the four research institutions, a whole $500 (or 16 percent) increase! Together, we can stop this from happening, and make history in doing so. Together, we can defend our education.
