ative to South Africa. Dense clumps of straight, narrow, evergreen leaves send up slim, 1- to 2-ft. stems topped by clusters of small, trumpet-shaped, pinkish lavender flowers. Suffer frost damage at 20° to 25°F/-7° to -4°C but recover quickly. Start plants from con­tainers or divisions at any time (though early spring or early fall is best in hot-summer areas).  Give well-drained, organically enriched soil.  Divide clumps to increase plantings.

Tulbaghia violacea

Bluish green, very narrow leaves. Clusters of 8–20 flowers; bloom is heaviest in spring and summer. Leaves and flower stems have onion or garlic odor if cut or crushed; leaves can be used in cooking.
