Please note: The last five videos here are new and were made in Aug'08 (again I'm not great at making good videos but you can see how far they've progressed with their education etc...)
There many flaws in these videos (created by Padmini) like for example, upside down, portrait views etc.. I hope they are not judged for their quality.

(made in Aug 2008) (made in Aug 2008) (made in Aug 2008) | We were waiting for amma (M. Vasundhara Devi ) while she was collecting old clothes from someone when the kids broke out into a dance. They LOVED being photographed!! After working all morning (the videos of which are below) they still couldnt get enough. And well, I couldnt get enough of shooting them.
In this the kids describe themselves. Its mostly in hindi. they are cutting grass from around the plants they planted long ago. Its rainy season and a lot of weeds and grass have grown about them... They work with such surprising ease and precision (and also comfort) with knives about half their own height. In this video I rotated the camera a lot of times. I know its very annoying. I apologize for that! In this mummy (M. V. Devi) talks a bit about the delicious food and clothes that were a major incentive for the kids to come. It must be noted though that now they've developed a keen interest in environment and of their own volition collect discarded plants and bring them home to plant them every sunday.
This is a dance for Independence day on a song which goes "mere desh India..." this was choreographed and taught to the kids by the Ladies Club of SAIL, Ranchi who are now running a wonderful free school for the children. And I've heard they sponser the bright kids into one of the bigger schools... This is the indigenous dance of their community.. its uncoordinated because they've improvised but despite that its pretty nice to watch... Sare Jahan Se Achha - I bet there's not one Indian who wouldnt know this by heart... They were taught this again for the Independence day celebrations at the Ladies Club School.... And last but not the least: Mummy bought a football for them to liven up their Sundays... On this particular day the football field was too wet so they ended up playing throwball in the DPS parking lot... there was a race after this that I didnt shoot but for all concerned: Pankaj was first, Ganesh second. |
