Land Use and Growth Management

Adopting more efficient land use patterns can preserve natural resources, reduce dependence on motorized transportation, and reduce emissions.

There are a variety of ways that local governments can implement more efficient land use patterns. Metroplan will be researching positive incentives, such as grants, for managing growth.  Local governments can also share model ordinances and best practices for land management and development on this site.

Tools that influence land development include:

·         Regional land use plan and map

·         Voluntary growth management plan

·         Local comprehensive plan and map

·         Zoning regulations

·         Subdivision regulations

o   Storm water regulations

o   Tree preservations

o   Parking maximums

o   Building codes
