A green community certification can enhance the identity of a community, attract green businesses and new residents, and enhance the quality of life. While there are certifications for green buildings and construction, currently there is not a recognizable way to identify green local governments. There are several programs that are trying to establish a nation-wide community green certification, but one has not emerged as the standard. Some states and regions have established green certifications that are tailored to their area. Central Arkansas, guided by the Green Task Force and Green Agenda Board Subcommittee, will be establishing a green certification program tailored to our region. Once established, Metroplan will implement the program by reviewing applications and issuing the certification. In addition to community-wide recognition, jurisdictions will be able to see how they compare to others in the region and how each local government is contributing to the region’s goals and progress. |
