Reading Guidelines

Most important rule in this course: Check this course website (not the Moodle site!) about twice a week, and follow the course announcements.

The information given in this website supersedes any other form of course communications. If I say one thing in the lecture and the course website says something else, do what the website says.

Reading Guidelines

There will be a weekly, mandatory reading. Here are some general reading guidelines:

  • The mandatory readings (קריאת חובה) in this course are taken from a collection of about a dozen great, carefully selected, books. Each reading provides a small sample of each book. It is quite likely that at the end of the course, or when you will have more time in your life, you will want to read these books from start to end.

  • Almost always, the text is taken from the middle of a book, sometimes from the middle of a chapter. Therefore, it is quite possible that you will not recognize some names, places, and events. Don't worry about it, just go with the flow.

  • Some of the texts are written in a style that may sound foreign to you. Don't worry about it, just go with the flow.

  • If you are not a native English speaker, you will not understand many words, phrases, and terms. That's a good opportunity to use a dictionary and improve your English. But even if you don't understand some words here and there, you can still go with the flow.

  • In short, don't worry too much about the details. Try to grasp the main story and the general spirit of the text. The details are less important.
