Green Parade - Saturday May 5, 2012 at 11:00 a.m.
GREEN and fun-loving people are invited to take part in the third annual Greater Green Bay Green Parade. The Green Parade was so much fun the last two (2) years that we have made this an annual event to celebrate Earth Day in the Greater Green Bay area community.
Organizers would like to invite you, your school, business, or organization to participate in this community event.
Rules of the Game Since this is a Green Parade it will be primarily a fossil fuel-free event. So ditch the truck and flatbed trailer and use your bike, your feet, and other green alternatives to transport your green-themed float. Electric and solar powered cars and scooters, vegetable oil-fueled cars, hybrids and Smart cars, bicyclists, pedi-cabs, rickshaws, roller bladers, pedestrians – anything eco-friendly.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle We encourage floats to be constructed with recycled or reused materials, or materials that can be recycled later. Let your imagination run wild! Visit resale and surplus stores and keep your eyes open for inexpensive ways to make your eco-themed float. Recycling containers will be available at the end of the parade so you can recycle your float and props.
Be Creative • Cut cardboard boxes into shapes and designs or bend chicken wire into shapes and cover with paper. • Cover cardboard or wood with water-based paint to add color. • Cover the float surface with natural materials such as flowers, coffee beans, rice, seeds or leaves. • Use, paper, aluminum foil and cans, and plastic bottles to construct your float. • Hook wagons together to create a train, snake, worm, or other multiple-piece float. • Build your base across two side-by-side wagons, shopping carts or dollies to create a wider float. • Build your base on an electric golf cart or on top of a hybrid car. • Build your base on 2 x 4s so people can carry your float.
Award Categories The Greater Green Bay Earth Week Coalition will award prizes to entrants in the following categories:
· Most Creative Entry · Best Use of Recycled Materials · Best Environmental Message · Most Outrageous
Parade Route The parade will be downtown Green Bay in the Broadway District. The parade will begin and end at the Old Fort Square on Broadway St. It will not be a very long route due to the fact that everything is “green powered.”
Registration Groups must register for a spot in the parade by April 15th. Please contact Jodi Arndt via e-mail at jla@lcojlaw.com for a registration form. .You may also print off a registration form by downloading the pdf form attached below.

This year, the Greater Green Bay Earth Week Coalition will hold its second annual Eco-Block Party to be held in the immediate vicinity of the Green Parade so participants of the Green Parade can simply walk over and participate in the Eco-Block Party. The party will be held at Veterans Memorial Park, immediately adjacent to the Neville Museum. There will also be events occurring within the Museum itself as the Coalition is teaming up with the Neville Museum this year to celebrate Earth Day. The Museum is even sponsoring an environmental scavenger hunt for the children and will be providing reduced admission for the day. The intent is to have a party that reminds us of what we know about living gently on the Earth and show us new things to do. People feel better after sharing a good time together and that is a goal of the Earth Week Coalition's eco-block party. Earth Day reminds us to love and care for the Earth and our fellow creatures. The Coalition is looking for non-profit groups, sustainable businesses, conservation friendly groups, etc., to take part. The Coalition will be sponsoring demonstration projects such as rain barrels, composting, etc. There will also be educational booths and fun activities, including an environmental scavenger hunt within the museum, for families to participate in. Please contact Jodi Arndt via e-mail at jla@lcojlaw.com if you are interested.
As we did last year, the Coalition has made arrangements for musical acts present at the Eco-Block Party. At 11:30 a.m., a local band, TimberMoon, will be playing some bluegrass music, and at 1:00 p.m., Strong Medicine, will be playing.

There will also be some eco-friendly food vendors present.
Teddy Bear Hunt - Sunday May 6, 2012 at 12:00 p.m.
The Brown County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League will be sponsoring its sixth Annual Teddy Bear Hunt from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Osprey Point on County Highway GV (one mile south of the Highway 172/Cty GV exit). As part of the Teddy Bear Hunt, the Izaak Walton League hides teddy bears throughout the trails at Osprey Point so children are able to "hunt" for a special teddy bear while acquainting themselves with the trails and natural resources Osprey Point has to share. Families purchase a "hunting license" for $15.00 ($10.00 if family is a member of the Chapter), which covers the cost of a hot dog lunch for the entire family, a teddy bear for each child, and other special outdoor activities such as fishing, bird watching, geo-caching and nature crafts. Each child also receives a special prize for their successful hunt. This truly is a value for families, as well as a great way for families to reconnect with nature.
The Chapter also includes an educational component to the day wherein families are able to learn something about a conservation related topic or learn a skill they can use in enjoying the outdoors. For example, in 2010, the Chapter paired up with Trout Unlimited who taught children how to fly fish. Contact Jodi Arndt at jla@lcojlaw.com for further information. |
