Information about the Greater Green Bay Earth Week Coalition

The Greater Green Bay Earth Week Coalition is made up of various conservation groups, neighborhood associations, businesses, government officials and citizens in the area that wanted to come together and bring attention to Earth Day on an annual basis.

The Coalition continues to build on the success of earlier Earth Week celebrations. Over the last several years, the Coalition has created a larger network of organizations that work together to  commemorate Earth Day and create a culture of sustainability in our community.  Our goal is to coordinate diversified events that appeal to different ages, abilities, and interests in order to engage the whole community, including members that may have had no specific interest in Earth Day or the environment previously.  With this approach, we hope to involve and create even a larger network of organizations or groups, engage at least 3500 Green Bay-area residents, and increase public awareness about conservation issues and sustainability efforts in the greater Green Bay area.

Goals of the Coalition

Although public awareness is the primary goal of Earth Week, there are several other goals, including the uniting of communities and introducing environmentally-friendly activities for families. For example, through the annual Baird Creek Clean Up and the Teddy Bear Hunt, we will be creating the means to unite communities around the common goal of improving their local environment.  We will also be hosting events that are family-friendly and inclusive of people of all ages.

Last year, over twenty, businesses or organizations were involved as sponsors, organizers or hosts.  In addition to retaining groups who had participated in the past, the Earth Week Coalition has gained several new partners including the Peace and Justice Center at St. Norbert College, the Green Bay Botanical Gardens, the Ecumenical Center at UWGB, the Restore and many more.

2012 Earth Day Celebration

April 22, 2012 celebrates the 42nd anniversary of Earth Day and the Coalition is already working hard to put together a spectacular lineup of events for the community.  This year, new and innovative projects are emerging along with the projects that have been successful in the past.  Leave Your Car at Home Day, the Baird Creek Clean Up and the Teddy Bear Hunt continue to be staples for Earth Week activities, and we anticipate them to continue to be well-received in 2012.  In 2011, the Coalition sponsored the 2nd Annual Green Parade, along with the First Annual Eco-Block party.  Because the parade was such a success, the Coalition is planning to hold the green parade and eco-block party every year.  Mark your calendars for 2012 -- the Green Parade and Eco-Block Party will be on Saturday May 5, 2012, beginning at 11:00 a.m. Further details will follow.

In addition to the staples, we have worked with various community partners like UW-Green Bay and the Restore to create activities that will continue to draw a diverse audience.  This year’s lineup of events will include a hands-on activity for school aged children. There will also be the showing of an enviornmental movie for the Earth Week movie presentation, which will be followed up by a panel discussion.

Check out the calendar of events by visiting our "Earth Week Calendar" and "Special Events" pages.
