Overfishing the Oceans
Gray Redding
Overfishing the Oceans The Oceans contain a renewable resource for food, in the form of fisheries, but the fisheries must be used at a set rate in order to make the process sustainable. Large numbers of people depend on the ocean and its fisheries for livelihood or sustenance, so depletion could be devastating to the world. These large numbers of people are creating a "Tragedy of the Commons", with the commons being the ocean's fisheries. A main problem involving the fisheries is the fact that the United Nations is the only real organization with power over most of the world. The global fisheries problem is a global issue, but the UN lacks the power to really effectively control the problem. |
