Recreational Use of the Grater Town Forest- hiking, biking, snow shoeing, bird watching, horseback riding, and skiing are all encouraged in the town forest.
Non-motorized Use - The main trail is designed as a multi-use, non-motorized trail, which will benefit both the middle school students and the general public. The trail is designed for use by cross- country runners and as an educational trail for middle school classes. The trail will be suitable for use by families seeking an easily walked trail for all ages, with interesting wild life observation opportunities. Dog owners are welcome but must leash their pets for safety reasons.
Mud Season – In general, trails may be closed during the transitional thaw period from winter to spring .When the trail is muddy, trail use can cause environmental damage. Soil type, wet weather conditions and melting snow all make the trail thread soft. Use of a muddy trail and/or a section of mud, can cut into the trail leaving ruts. These ruts then fill with water and over time, erode the trail to a point that is becomes unappealing to all users.
Motorized Use- Operators of motorized vehicles should only use designated trails, maintain a safe speed and be respectful of other users of the trail system. They should avoid steep hills and designated wetland areas.
Trash – The town forest and the trail system are sensitive environmental areas and are easily impacted by trash. This includes all animal waste. A “carry in-carry out” policy is in effect for everyone, so please carry out all trash when leaving the property.
Fires and Alcoholic Beverages- There are no fires or consumption of alcoholic beverages allowed on the property.
Hunting Season – Hunting is allowed on the Grater Woods Town Forest but not on the Merrimack Middle School parcel. Hunters should follow all state and town laws. During hunting season, it is highly recommended that users wear blaze orange while out in the woods.
Signage – Respect wetland signs and no motorized vehicle signs.
