Graphic Novels as history

Lesson Three-Create your own graphic story

Objectives of this lesson:
  • To give students a tool to use in the 21st Century to convey a message.
  • To give students an opportunity to critically analyze visual mediums.
  • To give students an opportunity for creativity.
The teacher will give background information and read In the Shadow of No Towers by Art Speigelman to the class.
He wrote it about the World Trade Center and the attack of 9/11.    What we are going to do is to take this a step further.  There have been many personal accounts of September 11, 2001 and the Holocaust.  We are going to focus on those accounts as a part of our history by taking one of those personal stories and putting our spin on it in Graphic form.

The media specialist will instruct on how to use Comic Life. (Sample attached below)

The students will spend 3-5 days finding a personal account and constructing a story in graphic format using that personal account as a basis of information. (40 points)

The students will turn in their comic story and the personal account they related to with their personal reflection. (10 points)

Reflection:
1.  Do you think comics is a good way to express history?
2.  What have you learned from this unit?
3.  Do you feel graphic novels are an essential part to learning?
4.  How did you feel about Art's relationship to his father?
5.  Could we ever have another Holocaust or 9/11?

Choose 3 out of the 5 questions and write about it.

Then, write how this unit could be improved or more relevant to you.
