Graphic Novels as history

Lesson Two- Graphic Novelists

Objectives of this lesson:
  • To see how many people have written historical graphic novels.
  • To learn how they came to be graphic novelists.
  • To develop an appreciation for works of historical fiction.
I know that Art Speigelman won a Pulitzer Prize for Maus, in 1992.  And since we are speaking of historical graphic novels, one should look at all graphic novelists that have written historical fiction.  I came up with this list:

Art Speigelman        Marjane Satrapi        Will Eisner            Joe Sacco
Kyle Baker                Neil Gaiman              Karl Zinmeister    Sid Jacobson
Ernie Colon              Eric Fein                    Don Lomax          Martin Lemelman
Theodore Geisel     Alan Moore                Joe Kubert

*NOTE: Not all the authors illustrated their graphic novels, however, I feel like the students should look at these men or women and discover what historical graphic novels they have done and their ties to the graphic novel.

TASK:
  1. Students may choose to do a power point of their author, a PhotoStory, or set up a press release where they assume the novelist's identity, write out questions that novelist could answer and we as an audience ask the questions given to us.  The media specialist and teacher will instruct on the uses of power point.  The media specialist will instruct students on using PhotoStory.
  2. Students must cite the sources given in MLA format.
  3. Students should include author's background, his/her relationship and how it begun with the graphic format, his/her works (non-graphic and graphic), and what the authors plans to do in the future (if still living, if deceased when he/she died), what awards or accomplishments they have achieved.
  4. During their presentation, they will be graded by the rubric given to them at the start of this project. Rubric worth 16 points. (See below)
  5. The power point must contain 8-10 slides.  PhotoStory must be 3-5 minutes in length. (Samples of Power Point and Photo Story are attached) Press release must include at least 10-15 questions. (Worth 9 points)

A few graphics are not attractive but all support the theme/content of the presentation.
All graphics are attractive but a few do not seem to support the theme/content of the presentation.
Several graphics are unattractive AND detract from the content of the presentation.
    Effectiveness
Project includes all material needed to gain a comfortable understanding of the topic. It is a highly effective study guide.
Project includes most material needed to gain a comfortable understanding of the material but is lacking one or two key elements. It is an adequate study guide.
Project is missing more than two key elements. It would make an incomplete study guide.
Project is lacking several key elements and has inaccuracies that make it a poor study guide.

    Total: 25 points
