DCCD, Once Again

From Sunday, January 11 through Saturday, January 17th, there was one week of free local rock music every night. For one week this past month, established bands like Tuscadero, the Put Outs and Tsunami played live shows on the same bill as up-and- coming bands like The Others and Free Range Pilgrim. And it was free. And it was at DCCD.

Once again, DCCD is featured in the DC Musicwwweb. But they deserve it.

Every night of that week, the store was packed; people leaning on the CD racks, up against walls, standing in the midst of a plethera of other people. All there to see music.

Each band played approximately 30 minutes or so, which seems short, but was really not. The audience got to hear live local music. The bands got to play their music. Connections were made. (All right, that sounds a little corny, but now people know these bands.)

I applaud DCCD for coming up with this idea and organizing all these bands to come in and play. When I first talked to them back in December and I heard the idea, I had no clue that it would happen so quickly and with such bravado. This idea of giving to the community is great (it is also great for their business, but nonetheless still great) because it exposes people to music that they might not otherwise go out and see in clubs.

The smaller venue of the store (which has a stage in back and which allows bands to get really loud if they want) provides an intimacy between the performer and the audience that you sometimes miss in other clubs. I hope this chance to see local music live and close-up will bring more people out to see the bands that play around town.

DCCD is going to continue hosting live bands, and has plans to start having a band every other week in February and March, hopefully increasing to one a week after that. They are interested in any local band that wants to perform, so please contact them. Not only will you thank them for the exposure to play, but the listening audience will too.
