Final Draft Dystopia Essay

An Impossibly Perfect World

Humans were not meant to live in a perfect world. The Bible shows that Adam and Eve were expelled from the of the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:23). This shows that even the first humans to ever be on Earth who had lived in the most perfect society, could not handle the perfection and were ostracized from the Garden for sinning.  Unlike in the Bible, Brave New World life is perfect for all who have been raised and sheltered there, except for poor Bernard Marx. Everyone is having sex whenever they liked, if anything ever went wrong they could take some soma, and everyone was happy with whatever type of person they are. But when John the savage came from the Reservation he could not live there because nothing was old-fashioned. People were having sex everywhere and there were no problems to deal with. The old fashioned human race would much rather choose imperfection and unhappiness, as Huxley put it, instead of living in a perfect society (p. 237-240). In 1984, instead of letting the population do whatever they wish and give them whatever they want, everything is rationed and the people are always watched and there thoughts are monitored. When the people of Oceania think something against the figurehead of the society, Big Brother, such as Winston did, they get taken to a rehabilitation prison. At that rehabilitation prison, Orwell says  "We convert him, we capture his inner-mind, we reshape him. We burn all evil and all illusion out of him; we bring him over to our side, not in appearance, but genuinely, heart and soul" (p. 255). This is the way that they keep everything at homeostasis in the book 1984. The two books 1984, and Brave New World, are examples that humans were not supposed to live in a perfect society, just to strive for perfection, like we do today.

Humans were not supposed to live in a perfect society. This is shown in Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, by John, a man born to a woman from the society, who was left at the reservation when becoming pregnant. John has spent all his life wondering what the world outside the society would be like. He had been dreaming about it for as long as he could remember, "The happiest times were when she told him about the Other Place," (Huxley p. 127-128). Then Lenina and Bernard came into the picture. Bernard is a struggling Alpha from the world society who might get banished from the society to live with the not normal people of the time on Iceland. He was looking for any way he could to redeem himself and then he met John. John needed Bernard so that he might be able to get to the perfect world society where everything is better than the reservation; Bernard needs John so that he may become famous back at the world society for bringing back a savage who was the son of The Director. When John got to the world society it was not as he pictured it. To John this was the worst place he had ever been to. The people had no rules, they were unorthodox, and they did not believe in sex before marriage, or even marriage in general, "Mother, monogamy, romance... No wonder these poor pre-moderns were mad and wicked and miserable"(Huxley p. 39). To John, this was not his perfect society at all. This is why one perfect society, where everyone lived in harmony would not work because everyone has their different beliefs of what a perfect society is.

Humans are rebellious and that is why it would be impossible for us to live in a society such as the one in the book 1984, by George Orwell. In 1984, Orwell writes about a perfectly stable society that remains stable through loving the figurehead of Oceania, Big Brother, and constant monitoring by telescreens. Telescreens are a technological device that streams and captures video and sound simultaneously (p. 3). Humans of modern society would not be able to live like that because we all have our own opinions and we are so used to showing our emotions and having our own style, that everyone would be trying to break the rules to show who they are. It would also be hard to hide our true emotions from the telescreens because we are very used to when we are actually sad, putting on a sad face. It would take time to practice and perfect being able to put on a happy face when you are actually sad, and convincing everyone that you are actually happy. It would also be nearly impossible to use doublethink. Doublethink is the act of believing contradictory statements (Orwell p. 26-27). Without doublethink, the people of Oceania would not be able to believe the main slogans of the party that Orwell writes are, "WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH" (p. 4). These statements are the way that the party keeps society stable, and it is impossible to comprehend these statements because the humans of today are not conditioned to believe whatever someone tells us, just what is logical. This  is why humans would not be able to live in the society of 1984.

In the Bible, the first two people to be on the Earth were Adam and Eve (Genesis 2:7,22). Adam and Eve lived in the perfect society of the Garden of Eden. The Lord told Adam to never eat from the tree of life or the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:16-17). When God made Eve from Adam, they lived happy together for a certain amount of time. The serpent came to Eve and told her to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil because it obviously would not kill her and it looked good. She ate it and gave some to Adam (Genesis 3:1-6). Right at this moment shows how humans were not supposed to live in a perfect society. Humans are rebels; it is as simple as that. All Adam and Eve needed was a little push to get them to disobey the Lord. True, the serpent deceived Eve, but the Lord specifically told her not to eat from that tree. If humans were supposed to live in a perfect society, Eve would not have had the temptation at all, she would have been completely obedient to the Lord. She, and probably Adam too, had the little rebellious part in them tempting them to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, even before the serpent. This shows that humans were not supposed to live in a perfect society.

In conclusion, the human race is on a long road, and at the end of the road is perfection. Humans should just strive for perfection, because when you actually become perfect, you have a huge distance to be plummeting right back to rock bottom. All it takes for that to happen is suddenly, someone decides that they do not like the way that things are being run and it is not perfect for them anymore. After that, he finds others with the same beliefs and then, like a rocket falling from outer-space, you lose all the ground that you had gained over the past billion years, and are forced to start from square one again. In the Bible, Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the tree of Knowledge of good and evil. Then the Lord said, "'The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.' So the Lord God Banished him from the Garden of Eden... After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life," (Genesis 3:22-24). This signifies the end of the first eutopia ever known to man. These verses are show the final stages of a eutopian lifestyle; the fall.  In Brave New World, people are having sex all the time. There are no intimate relationships, they just do it to satisfy their needs and because it is fun. Also there are no problems in the World Society; think about this, if there were no problems in your life, no struggles of the average day, and all you had to do to get away from the world was to take a couple grammes of soma, which has no side effects whatsoever. Would you do it? If so for how long? After a while would you not get bored and want something to do or some problem with your friend that you could work out like in the real world?
